Coral Gables Art Cinema Kicks Off Cinema Conversations Series with Beginners
At the helm of the event is Gables Cinema Director and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Robert Rosenberg alongside Project Coordinator Charlie Michael who has a PhD in Cinema Studies.
"One of my big goals is to make movie going a very social and interactive experience so you're not just going with your friends but staying around and talking to other people about the film," says Rosenberg.
The story of Beginners is inspired by director Mike Mill's own father who came out of the closet late in life. It centers around Oliver (Ewan McGregor) who meets the unpredictable Anna (Melanie Laurent of Inglourious Basterds) only months after his father Hal Fields (Christopher Plummer) has passed away. Their new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who comes out late age of 75 and is able to lead a freer life.
Rosenberg has been tracking this film for a while with hopes of bringing it to the cinema. "It's so unusual that the story partly centers around the 75-year-old man going through a huge life change and choosing to find himself a whole new set of experiences. It's not a typical Hollywood story to be told."
Last week, the cinema welcomed record breaking audiences with up to one thousand people attending the show in the first week. According to Rosenberg, it's the biggest seller ever and a great number for a city like Miami where alternative films are not commonly raved about.
See Beginners tomorrow at 6:45 p.m. with screenings through July 14. Tickets cost $6 to $10. Coral Gables Art Cinema is located at 260 Aragon Avenue in Coral Gables. Visit gablescinema.com.
