Red Bull's King of the Rock (KOTR) competition is bringing its qualifier to the Magic City, giving 64 lucky local streetballers the opportunity to compete for the ultimate prize at the finals in San Francisco.
This balls-to-the-wall basketball contest pits player against player, one-on-one, for the chance to be dubbed the "2012 Red Bull King of the Rock." The overall winner will receive a custom trophy and $20,000. Not to mention street cred as the world's best one-on-one competitive street basketball player.
Finalists, after enduring some serious head-to-head court combat in their respective regions, are given the chance to do basketball battle in San Francisco -- on Alcatraz itself (aka The Rock) -- for the grand prize. (The Miami winner will receive a $1,000 prize, along with a free trip to the finals in San Francisco.)
Red Bull created this contest in 2010 to find the best of the best in streetballers worldwide.
Upon its inception, the competition became the first official sporting event ever to be held on the infamous prison isle. It was also the first time basketball had been played there since the inmates left in 1963.
The contest has now expanded to qualifiers in 27 countries, and 33 cities were chosen across the U.S. as the top basketball markets, Miami included. (We're flattered.) A total of 64 finalists will head to the island to compete in The Yard on Alcatraz on September 22.

In the Miami competition, games will last five minutes and be subject to regulation hoops rules/scoring. Participants will go head-to-head on an outdoor court, using a single elimination tournament bracket. Players will engage in four half-court games going simultaneously, each with its own referee, court manager, and scoreboard. All winners will then immediately proceed to the next court to face another player.
The action kicks off at Jose Marti Park, 351 SW Fourth Street on July 21 -- first come, first served. Only 64 players will be allowed to compete. Registration opens at 5 p.m. and competition begins at 6 p.m. Good luck, ballers!
