Strange Ways and O Cinema invite you to a Slumber Party... but be warned. This kind of slumber party includes screams, blood, and murder.

On Wednesday, September 26, the Slumber Party Cinema Series turns O Cinema into a house of horror with a double feature of 1980s horror movies. The September edition of the series will feature Blood Simple, Joel and Ethan Coen's first feature film about a Texas bar owner who hires a detective to spy on his wife, plus one second, surprise film.

Luis Pinto, the mastermind behind the Slumber Party Cinema Series, thinks of the '80s horror movies with a sense of nostalgia, and says he especially cherishes the cover art. He teamed up with O Cinema, one of Miami's premiere independent theaters specializing in alternative films and programming, to share his passion with others looking to enjoy classic horror films on the big screen.

"O Cinema felt like it would be the right place to host these events. It is also in the right location, being in the center of Miami-Dade," Pinto said. "I had gone to an art/music performance there featuring the band Mothersky and I fell in love with the atmosphere.

"O Cinema regularly programs off the beaten path kind of stuff and contemporary slasher and horror films," he continued, "so they have an appreciation for the genre and a mutual love for the throwback, over-the-top '80s flicks that I wanted to show."

The films in the series are all b-movies from the '80s. For each night, Pinto has chosen two films which play off of each other, juxtaposing certain elements. The October movies, for example, both feature a punk theme, but in terms of plot and execution one is more serious than the other, Pinto says.

The series continues October 24 with Suburbia, the story of a group of runaways, and Class of Nuke Em High, featuring a mutant baby out for blood (naturally). For the November 24 screening, Pinto selected Terrorvision, in which an alien garbage monster snacks on the people of Earth, as well as The Winged Serpent.

Wednesday's screening begins at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10.50. Visit o-cinema.org.
