Miami New Times' Mastermind Awards honors the city's most inspiring creatives. This year, we received more than 100 submissions, which our staff narrowed to an elite group of 30. We'll be profiling those honorable mentions, and eventually the finalists, in the weeks to come. This year's three Mastermind Award winners will be announced February 28 at Artopia, our annual soiree celebrating Miami culture. For tickets and more information, visit the website.

"Zig" aka Andrew Leipzig really mixes it up. His work fuses the classic and the modern in ways that normal people would never imagine -- for instance, a Madonna carrying a boombox. Or a still life depicting grenades and missiles.

Says Zig, "I push myself to create works that can stand the test of time, to be epic, and make the viewer think. Not concerning myself with social acceptabilities [sic] but [manipulating] perceptions of time and relevance to misappropriate and juxtapose images that might not belong together and send a message or surrealist vision."

Originally from New York, Zig was raised by his grandparents in Brooklyn, whose son, Cy Gross, created work for Tiffany's and Town and Country magazine. Zig moved to Florida at the age of 15, attended Palm Beach Junior College and Florida Atlantic University, majoring in fine art with a minor in graphic art.

He's shown at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and galleries in Miami, South Beach, New York, and London, plus worked with Hilde Gerst Galleries, and served as art director for the Delray Beach and Boca Raton News.

Cultist: In first grade, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Zig: I can barely remember high school, but it's always been between an artist or an astronaut.

Favorite thing about Miami's art scene?
Miami draws people in from all corners of the globe. It's international flair along with an acute appreciation for contemporary art that makes it the capital of the art scene.

Least favorite thing about Miami's art scene?
Being the new guy in town (moved here about 6 months ago), not knowing the galleries and connections. Call me.

Why do you consider yourself a mastermind?
So much of the art that I see is a snooze fest. I like to engage the viewer and get the wow moment. If I don't challenge myself, then how can the art be engaging?

Name one thing you can only get in Miami that you can't live without.
Gotta have my café con leche; the beach is a close second.
