New MOCA curator Alex Gartenfeld.
Alex Gartenfeld's ascent in the art world has been quick and impressive. Just a year after graduating from Columbia, Gartenfeld was already editing at Art in America and Interview Magazine. He has cofounded two art spaces, helped foster the careers of artists such as Julia Rommel and Zak Kitnik, and is curating an exhibit due to open at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome this April.

After that, he's headed to Miami.

The Museum of Contemporary Art announced last night that it has hired Gartenfeld as a new curator. He's due to start in May.

"Alex has already distinguished himself by organizing trailblazing contemporary art exhibitions worldwide, and his relationships with artists and other curators make him a perfect match for our museum," executive director and chief curator Bonnie Clearwater said in a statement.

Gartenfeld won't replace anyone at the museum; the curator position is new at MOCA and will have the 26-year-old incomer both curating and administrating.

In a statement, Gartenfeld said he's "excited to engage the community." And though his official start date is months away, that engagement will unofficially begin tonight. Gartenfeld will host the art talk "Empire State: New York and Beyond" at MOCA at 7 p.m., giving Miami art lovers their first chance to grill the new guy on his plans for our city.

The lecture is free with museum admission, which costs $5 for the general public. Visit mocanomi.org.
