Even Florida Grand Opera Has Money Riding On the Miami Heat

Last night's opera-level tragedy.
There is only one thing on the minds of Miamians this week: the Heat battling it out with San Antonio in the NBA Finals. It doesn't matter who you are -- an artist, a fisherman, a business executive, a foul-mouthed Cuban puppet. If you're from Miami, you're rooting LeBron, D-Wade, and the rest of the team on to victory.

Even Miami's opera singers have gotten in on the action.

Florida Grand Opera has entered into a "friendly wager" with San Antonio's Opera Piccola. If the Heat lose, the FGO must send one of its stars to regale Texas with a song, plus a gift basket of only-in-Miami gifts for its CEO. If they win, on the other hand? We get our own performance from a San Antonio opera pro, and the FGO gets a basket full of Texas treats.

If When the Heat win, the recital by a San Antonio opera star will be free and open to the public. Think of it as the icing on an NBA championship trophy-shaped cake. A spokesperson for the FGO says that the winning city will have input into exactly what the visiting star will sing. For example, FGO will likely request "some zarzuela pieces that speak to Miami's large Cuban demographic."

No telling what Opera Piccola has up its sleeve if the Three Kings & company can't pull it off. An operatic rendition of "All My Exes Live in Texas?"

The Opera Piccola CEO has a pretty sweet surprise in store if the Heat do fall to the Spurs, though. FGO plans to make good on its bet by sending Joe's Stone Crabs in its (hypothetical and of course never going to happen) gift basket.

But FGO General Director and CEO Susan Danis is counting on chowing down cowboy-style.

"I'm looking forward to this," she said in a statement. "I've always wanted to try genuine Tex-Mex."
