III Points Festival: Get Your Video Game On at GAB Studio

Because your Mario Kart skills are a work of art unto themselves.
This weekend's III Points festival is a celebration of art, music, and technology. On Friday and Saturday, the GAB Studio will be transformed into the Bro Gaming Lounge, a place where you can enjoy some kicking tunes while playing video games.

Video games? Sure!

It only makes sense that video games be a part of the festival, as they exemplify each of the festival's themes -- not just technology, but art and music as well.

Games such as Gone Home and Flower are fine examples of gaming's capacity to create beautiful images and make people feel. Journey's soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy this past year. The Grand Theft Auto series has always had killer radio stations, with its latest installment being no exception (it even features folks like Bootsy Collins and Kenny Loggins as DJs).

Organizer Javier Uribe sees video games as a natural fit into the festival: "Right now we are at an important era for gaming, known as the 'seventh generation,' most popularly known for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Games for these consoles have evolved much more from old school games such as Pong or even [the Mario franchise] and now include soundtracks with today's most popular music...Jay Z is an executive producer on NBA 2k13, with the soundtrack heavily influenced by that."

You can celebrate video games through the generations at the Bro Gaming Lounge (a reference to BROmance Records, not to any dudebro stereotypes, thank goodness) from new classics like Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 to current generation stuff. An art installation from Chris Video accompanies consoles from the Super Nintendo to the Xbox 360. It's a great way to take in the history of console gaming right before the new hotness of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 drop in November.

Of course, it wouldn't be III Points without kicking tunes, so enjoy the likes of DJ Ynot, DZA, and Po$hstronaut (among others) while you're slaying faces at your favorite game.

The Bro Gaming Lounge kicks off at GAB Studio (103 NW 23rd Street, Miami) Friday from 9 pm to 1 am, and continues Saturday from 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. Admission is free.
