Miami Improv in Coconut Grove Shuts Down, Seeks New Miami Location

Coconut Grove's long-standing comedy club, Miami Improv, is no more. The spot is shuttered and all future shows are cancelled, a representative told Cultist.

The spot, tucked away at 3390 Mary St., wasn't doing well financially, according to the rep, so the owners decided to shut the doors. "We are contacting as many people as possible who have purchased tickets to refund everyone," she added.

The club was part of a chain with various locations across the country, including New York City, Hollywood (California), and Palm Beach.

According to the rep, the owners will be looking for a new Miami location in which to re-open. The marquee stills shows November dates for headliners Damon Wayans and Godfrey Louie. But the company's website, miamiimprov.com, shows an empty calendar, and calls to its former phone number are being forwarded to an office in Palm Beach.

Not everyone will be bummed by the closure. The club has haters, culminating in an entire website devoted to consumer complaints, MiamiImprovSucks.com.

The closure also comes on the heels of the approval of Grove Bay, a new waterfront development to go up along South Bayshore Drive. The multi-million dollar project is likely to lead to an influx of people into the Grove - so who knows what'll go up in the Improv's place.

Anyone with a ticket to a future show should call 305-441-8200 to ask about a refund.

Sad. But revitalization was necessary.

I went there not too long ago to see Charlie Murphy and the cockroaches flew down and started eating the woman's food that was sitting next to me

Liberty City would be a nice place, right under the bridge, across from the police department.

There are some big spaces on Washington Ave in SOBE that could work, between 7th & 6th St, Old club venues already licenced for that type of biz.

Man the Grove is becoming a graveyard...so many empty store fronts...sad day indeed...

Thanks for all of the love and honest feedback everyone....we know we have some things to fix but we tried to provide a first class comedy experience and we'll hopefully be back and better than ever real soon! It's a sad day but we can't tell you how much we've appreciated your support over the years.

Aventura, would be a great venue, so I won't have to drive so far.

Andrea, why would they go to Broward? They already have the hard rock improv there.

I hope everyone's "oh no's" are sarcastic. The staff treated customers like garbage and they took 2 drink minimums to a dark place. I wish this was permanent but they'll be reopening once they find a new location. Their business practices are atrocious. They shut down because they were bringing in mediocre comics and giving away half the house. We were paying those comics ANYWAY through their $18 drinks and automatic 18% gratuity. They have a lot of changing to do before they should even consider reopening.

Mayor Regalado lives in Shenandoah, miles away from the so-called noise (that Sarnoff punk's the one who lives nearby!!). With the IMPROV closing, there's no need for Cheesecake Factory or Señor Frogs to call it a day... Such a bustling area back in the day!! Anyone remembers Halloween, there?!?!

I'd say CocoWalk but the Mayor lives 2 blocks away and doesn't like the noise! Liquor stops early and the nightlife has suffered! He should Bill the tax payers for earplugs and bring back some cash flow!

Winwood is an ideal location

@Louis Wing  I guess the 2 parking garages in the Mayfair complex, 3 other parking garages, and a surface lot within a block of the Improv were too much of a walk for you.

@Javy Pino That area is actually doing pretty well and may just be a good fit.  Not sure if they have a suitable location for something like the Improv though.
