Britto Central, Miami artist Romero Britto's gallery on Lincoln Road, has been a touristy pop art staple in South Beach for years. But Miami's mecca for brightly colored Brazilian art could be changing locations.

The building that houses Britto Central, 818 Lincoln, has sold to a Canadian investor, The Real Deal reports.

The previous owning entity, 818 Lincoln Corp., reportedly sealed the deal last Wednesday, earning $34.5 million dollars in exchange for the prime piece of Lincoln Road storefront. The buyer is the equally creatively titled 818 Lincoln Investments, a company based in Montreal.

So yes, 818 Lincoln has now become an epicenter of things Miami locals love to complain about: Britto art and French Canadians.

But for how long? Lincoln Road has steadily been transforming into an outdoor mall, with retail chains like H&M and Forever 21 recently joining staples like Gap, J. Crew, and Pottery Barn. If the new owners want to make a quick buck on their investment, they may raise the rent, which could inspire Britto to move his Central space elsewhere. (Britto representatives did not return our request for comment.)

Then again, if there's any art space that can survive at a mall, it's Britto's. The guy has retail space at Miami International Airport, for crissakes.

i'd rather spend an eternity wandering through britto's overpriced rainbow hell than one minute walking around the same old 25 mall stores that we have literally everywhere else in the world.... lincoln road is just for basic bitches now

I agree with you all. But now that britto is gone what do you think is going to go there? Only going to get worse. It's a shame to see all the restUrants go and turn into all clothing stores

Jeez. And I thought Britto's gallery was helping Lincoln Road be a bland mall.

To call Bland our Lincoln Strip is an understatement, a very hypocritical one at that ~unless you risk to state that our city, yes, is, well, bland also.

Its seen much better days. Its full of chronies that stay around due to internal politics. Its time has really passed too. Nothing new or exiciting happens there anymore. Last few interesting years were 02-04

Well... the Arts Center is still there and in a different degree of course that our defunct Mr Britto, but let us be honest, Miami: the Arts Center is not great per se.

I agree Britto basicly is rubbish, but was a spot of colors in the middle of lots of standardized anonymous shops you can find everyware in the world.

Lincoln Road is filled with restaurants with bad service, and worse food. The servers are desperate for tables, the hostesses flaunt their bodies for customers. The stores are boring clothes stores that are pretty much all the same. They could do better, at least this art gallery tried to maintain a little culture aside from the trashy low class tourists that come here angry on their vacations pushing people. Everyone is so angry and rude here, the locals and tourists are all horrible human beings. Put a damn Ferris wheel or rides or something to cheer up these assholes down here. Even then these tourists will push and shove you out of line because they don't stand in lines in other countries apparently.

They could put a khaki bedsheets depot there and it would be better than fucking Britto.

Britto's stuff isn't even worth wasting your time with color by numbers paintings. Go across the concourse and look at the art in Peter Lik's exhibit. Yeah, I know, where else would you find an artist named Peter Lik or Dick Lik, in Miami, South Beach ?

"Lincoln Road has steadily been transforming into an outdoor mall", the writer should note that the street is in fact called Lincoln Road Mall and has always been an outdoor mall with shops and dining. The fact that it is changing and rents are rising astronomically I cannot disagree with. Lincoln Road will change in character every few years as it has done since it was constructed. Whether the current model is sustainable or not is open to debate but for sure lots of business have been and will continue to be priced out of it.

Rent on Lincoln Rd. is too high for small businesses. They are doing this to themselves.
