Florida Is the Most Stressed State in America, Study Says

Feeling stressed yet?
What happened, Florida? Just one year ago, you ranked among the least stressful states in the nation, according to Gallup. But 2014 is the year of anxiety in Florida, at least according to the real estate blog Movoto, which recently named Florida the number one most stressed out state in the country.

To rank the lower 48 states according to stress, Movoto's study took several factors into account, including the percentage of the population with a commute over 20 minutes; the rate of unemployment; hours worked; population density; percentage of income spent on housing; and percentage of population without health insurance. Not measured: miles of beachfront; lack of polar vortexes; palm trees per capita.

Given those factors, it's not surprising that Florida came out on top (or bottom, depending on how you look at it). The Sunshine State's 11.3 unemployment rate and 25.8 percent of the population without health insurance earned it the number one ranking. (I-95 commute times probably didn't help, either.)

Georgia, New Jersey, and California followed Florida in the rankings. In general, Movoto found, "the farther from water you are, the more relaxed you get." Which makes sense, given that the population thins out towards the middle of the U.S., and one of the site's criteria is population density.

Okay, so Florida can be a stressful place to live. But maybe the benefits of living here are worth a little stress. Remember: The least stressed state in the country, according to Movoto, is North Dakota. Would you rather live in North Dakota? Yeah, we didn't think so.

We MUST DEMAND REINSTATE MIX USE ZONING PROPERTY RIGHTS, so can legally create own business from our HOMES. FLorida used to be mix zoning and areas were charming, bringing tourists vs the spreading plighted areas that allow industry or professional zoning, but do not allow us our constitutional rights. Please stand up for this inaliable property and equal economic right.

So wait, they used a survey from 2008 (which was not event linked) to determine the median stress rate based off their subjective criteria's? Ya ok... Seriously though, any state that was hit hard by the housing crash would rate very high in this study due to the time frame in which the survey was conducted was taken.

I'm a native, I love it, and I'm not going anywhere. Stress is what you allow it to be.

I wouldn't call it the most stressful state but rather one of the most underpaid and most expensive state to live in.  Here in Miami Florida there are less chances to excel if you are not Cuban and not fluent in Spanish.  Imagine how much you pay for Rent or Mortgage, Gasoline, Insurance, Food and other utilities minus from your monthly income if you are not saving 30% then you got to think about other avenues and states where cost of living is less then Miami, FL.

Having lived here a year & a half I'll definitely say ONCE YALL GET BEHIND THE WHEEL Floridians (Miamians in particular) instantly become very stressed & uptight. Worst most rude drivers I've ever seen and I've driven everywhere.

Florida is an unfolding disaster area, which should be a surprise to no one whose brain actually functions.Sadly, this seems to be not the case for most in government nor those who head major businesses in the state.

Definitely stress to live here. It's because the areas are overpopulated and majority of residents are in a damn rush all the time.

.....................otherwise ranking a geographic location is silly - what has to be ranked regarding stress is the place on the TOTEM POLE one is to either being the cause of stress or being the recipient of the problems that cause stress

i would imagine retirees may be stressed about medical conditions - so that's about two thirds of the state right there because of advanced age here in God's Waiting Room

the other significant factor is the ability to communicate oneself and there goes another significant portion of the population that cannot speak ENGLISH so of course they either CAUSE the stress or RECEIVE the stress depending on the situation HOWEVER stress is a major resulting factor on BOTH sides

finally we have a load of dumb people IN FACT FLORIDA is a magnet for stupidity and with stupidity comes all manner of stress - again both creators and receivors - and on that score alone FLORIDUH is in the top ten

Miami is a big city...who still thinks and acts like a small town. The weather is beautiful, the beaches etc...but unfortunately the people who've chosen to live here have the ugliest attitudes. The different cultures don't compliment each other they actually clash. Creating an enigma of a community. Basically there is no sense of community.

Michael Hummel ive been driving her past 13 years. Weekdays home to work 1 1/2 hour each way. Weekend it is a 20 minute drive. No different 13 years ago. Boston sit on a train listen to music have my coffee stops every other corner . No decent public transit here. Read Rob Hernandez post! My biggest stress is traffic. Late to work time missed with family etc. For $50 tolls p month and gas blown sitting in 5 mph traffic .

STRESS IN FL...all it takes is a nice 5 mile drive to work that takes 2 hrs accompanied by 500,000 late to work drivers and then spend the work day thinking about the other 2 hrs you have to drive back home.
