De La Soul? Not Even Close

The Museum of Contemporary Art offered up a gift too good to be true this past Saturday evening in Wynwood: A free live performance by De La Soul to cap off Moca's e-merce b-boy block party. Unfortunately, it was all just a dream, the kind of stuff you read about in Word-Up magazine. No Posdnuos. Trugoy the Dove? Not here, son. Prince Paul. Ha!
Only Maseo showed up. And he didn't even rap, spending the entire evening behind the decks. Yo, he didn't even play one De La song on a night that was perfect for a rollerskating jam named "Saturdays."

Don't get me wrong: Maseo DJ'ed a tight set of vintage hip-hop, funk and disco tracks while the Flipside Kings entertained the family-oriented crowd with a steady dose of body rocking and pop-and-locking.

But the only emcee on the scene was Baby Bam from the Jungle Brothers, who keeps biting off Method Man's anthem by rapping his own version in which he switches out the M-E-T-H-O-D-M-A-N for B-A-B-Y-B-A-M. I guess Baby Bam is too embarrassed to house anybody these days. -Francisco Alvarado
