Death Cab For Cutie

Categories: Culture
Umm, which way is Miami?
After winning critical kudos for their output on Seattle's tiny Barsuk Records, Death Cab For Cutie finally struck career paydirt when they inked a well-deserved major label affiliation and, in turn, a shot at wider recognition. But while Plans, last year's aptly dubbed Atlantic Records debut, had most observers gushing its praises, some fans suggested their Plans had led the band astray. It was, to be sure, an inevitable backlash that found them accused of abandoning their indie ethos. Never mind that it was one of the strongest showings in their still fledgling career. Or that chief Death Cab driver Chris Walla has a knack for melodic invention that brings to mind such respected musical elders as Ray Davies and Brian Wilson. Indeed, while they may resemble the proverbial nerds and nebbishes in outward appearance, Death Cab For Cutie proves that craft can be cool and a hum-worthy hook never goes out of style.

Death Cab For Cutie perform tonight, November 20, at 8:00 pm at the University Of Miami Convocation Center, 1245 Walsh Ave, Coral Gables. Tickets cost $69 - $119. Call 305-284-8686.
