Mullin Buys Back In

Categories: News
Once an ink-stained wretch...
New Times's former editor Jim Mullin inked a deal yesterday to buy The Biscayne Times. The paper was voted Best Neighborhood Newspaper in New Times's 2005 Best Of Miami edition.

With a circulation of 25,000, the paper is distributed free to homes and businesses along the Biscayne corridor from 15th to 163rd streets, including Edgewater, Morningside, Belle Meade, El Portal, Miami Shores, Biscayne Park, and Arch Creek.

Artist Skip Van Cel, the paper's founder, is selling The Biscayne Times , but will continue to write a column.

In an interview from his dentist's chair (he was about to get a crown), Mullin said Van Cel approached him with the idea, as a way of ensuring the paper's future and Van Cel's own vision for it. Mullin said he believed that, at four years old, The Times had established
a lasting presence in the local media firmament. "It's in excellent shape," he said. "It's poised for growth."

He said he looks forward to "learning a new job" -- that of publisher. Asked how he feels about the paper's small staff -- four people, total -- Mullin pointed out that when he took the helm at New Times in the late 80s, he started with a staff of two. "So I have twice the staff, and two times the size of my old office, so it feels positively luxurious."

Hope the same can be said for that crown. Good luck, Jim. -Frank Houston
