Paving Paradise

Closed for (boat) business: below mile marker 113, on Blackwater Sound in the Keys
Expansion work on US 1 in the Keys is obliterating the reason for going there. In addition to being a likely contributor to the algae tide choking swaths of Florida Bay, the work on an 18-mile stretch of the road will pave over the only two free, easily accessible public boat ramps between Florida City and Key Largo. Favorite entrance spots for backcountry paddles among calm, shallow waters and mangrove-lined creeks, the put-in spots - at mile markers 113 and 111 - will soon become pieces of asphalt for vacationers to speed over on their way to Key West. -Rob Jordan
