Feeling Blue

I see blue people
It's a roady's wet dream: massive, pyrotechnic multimedia displays, a hard-rocking band with no less than three drum sets, all manner of technical doodads (like mic'd PVC pipes), electrified outfits, and no end of scrolling screen imagery.

The Blue Man Group rolled into town last night as part of their tour, "How to be a Megastar Tour 2.0. "

You've seen them before on some commercial or maybe on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. You know, the three guys painted — or actually wearing skin suits — to look like bright blue aliens. Apparently, the wildly popular act will be setting up shop at Universal Orlando Resort come June, performing there regularly, doing the house band thing. Which is weird.

After taking in their show at the Bank United Center, I couldn't help but wonder why they would go the Disney route, doing the Wayne Newton thing. Their show is odd and, in places, somewhat profound, if not totally edgy. I can't imagine another Universal Orlando act dropping references to Carl Jung and the collective unconscious or urging a reconsideration of unremarkable cubicle lives and social masks while inspiring head-banging amid middle age audience members.
Oh yeah, and then there's Floppie the Banjo Clown. --Rob Jordan
