Miami Joins Select "Fast" Company

Categories: Culture

Fast Company has named Miami one of its “30 Fastest Cities in the World” this year. Calling it a “culture center,” the lowly intern given the task of researching Miami on the Internet came up with examples like ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, architecture firm Arquitectonica, and Cesar Pelli’s Carnival Center as proof of the city’s new cultural clout.

Call us naysayers, but all the important people at Crispin have moved to its new office in Boulder, Arquitectonica is old enough to have work featured in the credits of Miami Vice, and the Carnival Center is on the verge of bankruptcy in its first year of existence. The blurb also states that “Mayor Manny Diaz wants all new buildings 50,000 square feet or more to be silver LEED certified or better.” Emphasis on “wants.” City officials can’t agree on any zoning code, let alone an environmentally friendly one.

Finally, the article states Miami’s population is 5.5 million – slightly more than the 2006 U.S. census bureau estimate of 2.4 million residents in Miami-Dade County. -- Emily Witt
