Salmonella is transferred via fecal matter. It could be transferred in organic vegetables as easily as in non-organic. Dumbass.

Posted On: Thursday, Jun. 12 2008 @ 9:57PMIt is true that fecal matter can be used for fertilizer on any vegetables, conventional or organic. But there are no restrictions on manure use on conventional farms, whereas certified organic growers have to follow strict rules for handling manure -- on organic farms it gets composted according to exacting procedures that cause the compost to heat up to a temperature that kills disease organisms. If manure is not composted, it must be tilled into the soil at least 120 days before the harvest of a food crop that comes in contact with soil (such as spinach); or at least 90 days before the harvest of a food crop that does not come in contact with the soil (such as sweet corn). These rules for manure use are designed to minimize the chance that disease organisms will contaminate organic vegetables. Which is likely why none of the major outbreaks of recent years -- scallions, spinach, tomatoes, etc. -- have involved organic vegetables.
Posted On: Friday, Jun. 13 2008 @ 11:56AMYes, eating organic is probably wise, but we should still be vigilant. Many of the more well-known organic companies are now subsidiaries of the larger agricultural conglomerates. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it's probably not the image people conjure when they see the "organic" label. I've also been noticing that many of the bags of organic vegetables I see in Publix and Whole Foods come from China.
I think eating local and knowing the farmers who produce your food is a wise move too.
