Gay-Friendly Cuba?

Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 11:42:58 AM

The Cuban government's policies on their gay citizens have been in the news quite a bit these days. Mariela Castro-Espin, daughter of the famed Fidel, successfully fought for approval of government-funded sex change operations in the country, a startlingly progressive shift in attitudes. They even had a gay pride parade planned, until the government became skittish and shut everything down. But at least they tried. Better luck next year.

Although we must question the government's motives behind these recent changes in attitude. The local community isn't really aware of any pro-gay developments -- the papers never write about these stories, very few people have access to the internet, and Castro's cronies aren't exactly walking around telling the country they are handing out sex changes for free. This news is being spread more to the international press, perhaps to paint the picture of Cuba as a gay tourist paradise, and bring in ever-more-valuable foreign money to the country?

Never mind the fact that Castro's Cuba has one of the worst track records on gay rights in the world, with a long list of abuses like torture and imprisonment. But pay no attention to the man behind the curtain! Look at the lovely beaches instead! It's a gay tourist paradise!

Looks like Dan Renzi didn't notice the officially-sponsored Cuban celebration of World Anti-Homophobia Day on May 17, Ricardo Alarcon, the president of Cuba's national assembly was one of the speakers, and they even had a drag show as well. This was reported all over the world, but perhaps it wasn't noticed at NEW TIMES

Though I'm not yet aware of ANY government on the world who is trying to score points by being PRO-GAY, with the possible exception of the mayor of San Francisco, California, Cuba's changed attitude toward LGBT people is both palpable and very well-documented, even though the Dan Renzi seems to be oblivious to this.

Just google this: lgbt-cuba and you will find hundreds of articles, documents and translations from the Cuban press, some of them going back all the way to the 1960s. You can read some of the silly and prejudicial things Fidel Castro said then, to his more sympathetic comments in recent years, all of which are documented.

What Walter Lippmann kind of forgets to mention:

Cuban security agents detain gay activists, cancel parade

Gay dissidents in Cuba report that a planned gay-rights rally Wednesday
was canceled after government security officers detained nine organizers.

"The march was not able to take place because the government stopped our
leaders," said Ron Brenesky, a Miami Cuban who heads the Unity
Coalition, South Florida's largest Latin gay rights group.

"Our brothers and sisters in Cuba, they are not alone," said Brenesky,
who spoke with gay activists in Cuba by cellphone Wednesday evening.
Unity Coalition members gathered for the phone call at Club Azucar on
Southwest 32nd Avenue in Little Havana.

Dissident Ignacio Estrada Cepero told Brenesky and the others that he
was detained early Wednesday before the planned rally in Havana.
Security guards told him he didn't have permission to leave his home
province of Santa Clara, Brenesky said.

Cuban Aliomar Janjaque was put on house arrest after being warned not to
gather in a park with other gay dissidents, he told Unity Coalition members.

The park was taken over by security forces, Janjaque said.

Lots of articles that Cuban propagandist Walter Lippmann (apologist for human rights abuses) would perefr you never saw:

Carlton Solomon says:

Oh, Walter Lippmam! Where to begin? You don't know of any government in the world that"s pro-gay? The Colombian congress has granted civil status to gay couples. The governments of Canada, Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Norway, Belgium, Spain, Britan, Israel, all recognize gay marriage(though in Israel it means recognizing marriages that occur outside of the country).
You want to talk about Alarcoa participating at a anti-homophobia event? Then explain why these gays were not able to demonstrate for their demands? An official apology for the forced labor camps of the sixties, the forced labor projects of the seventies that Reinaldo Arenas documents in his memoirs and an end to police harassment?
Why not talk about the different groups that wanted to participate in this event? One of them represents people with AIDS in prison, and another a gay politicalprisoner- behind bars for calling FC a homophobe-who is on a hunger strike.

I have a different take on this supposed "gay pride parade" in Havana. It was a setup from start to finish orchestrated in Miami in an attempt to discredit positive changes in Cuba and thwart gay progress on the island.

There are gay celebrations in Havana regularly. There was a large official May 17 event around the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO), and a June 14, 2008 gay celebration at Mi Cayito Beach just east of Havana.

Please see http://gaycuba.ca/together/

This site has photos and videos that prove big gay events actually happen in Cuba unlike the sham June 25 parade designed as a ruse by the Unity Coalition to attack island gays and their government.
