Jack Thompson Faces Permanent Disbarment

Jack Thompson, the serial litigator and would-be censor whose crusade against violent video games, porn, rap music and other things he considers unseemly, has a legal career that is suddenly teetering on the brink of legal-eagle oblivion. Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Dava Tunis, the referee in Thompson's disbarment proceedings, rejected the Florida Bar's recommendation of disbarment for ten years.

How about, she suggested, permanent, non-negotiable disbarment? And a fine amounting to more than $43,000?

Tunis reached her recommendation after reviewing thousands of pages of complaints, as well as things like Thompson's appearance on 60 Minutes with reporter Ed Bradley.

Bradley was reporting on a kid in Alabama who had shot a couple of cops, and Thompson said he could prove that the video game Grand Theft Auto made him do it.

Tunis noted that Thompson continued to wear his 15 minutes of 60 Minutes fame like "a veritable badge of honor." Then he sent a fax to the judge in the case, attempting to re-argue matters that had already been heard in court. Lawyers aren't supposed to communicate informally with judges on matters before them.

In the end, Thompson's fate will be decided by the Florida Supreme Court, with Tunis' 165-page compendium for guidance.

Full story in this upcoming week's edition of our sister publication to the north the New Times Broward-Palm Beach. Read "Jack Thompson Don't Know Jack" for more on his troubles with the Florida Bar.

Jack Thompson, Attorney says:

Excuse me, but I represented the families of three cops killed by the boy, and I was granted pro hac vice status by the court in Alabama to do so. I never represented the killer. My goodness, that's just for starters as to what you got wrong.

I'll be sending a demand for retraction in the morning. What idiots you are at this rag. Jack Thompson

Sirius says:

I would consider what appears to be a misunderstanding to be much more forgivable than, say... harrassing a fellow professional over a period of several years, including labelling him a child pornographer, lying about his conduct to his colleagues, and other equally disgusting actions with no small amount of malicious forethought.

What amazes me is that you did all that because he committed the heinous crime of being out of town when you wanted him to do something for you.

How do you look in the mirror at the end of the day?

The following assertion is utterly false and defamatory:

"Bradley was reporting on a kid in Alabama who had shot a couple of cops, and Thompson said he could prove that the video game Grand Theft Auto made him do it. On 60 Minutes, Thompson represented himself as the boy's attorney. Problem was: He hadn't been granted the right to practice law in Alabama, nor was he the attorney of record."

Sortableturnip says:

The 60 Minutes interview aired 3/6/05 and, in fact, the motion for pro hac vice hadn't even been date stamped by the Court yet. Your pro hac vice request wasn't granted until 3/22/05, a full 16 days after the 60 Minutes segment was aired.

See page 45-46 of the following document:

Who's telling the truth now, Jack?

broken says:

Hey jack, wasn't that the case where you "pro hac vice" status was later revoked?

HarmlessBunny says:

Jack, funny running into you here again. Are you lying here AGAIN. Yeesh Jack, quit lying! This is how you got into trouble to begin with. Don't you have some fake conspiracy to crack before you get disbarred? I think you are so twisted that you are believing your own lies. Now go adjust your tinfoil hat. Shoo shoo, go, get...

Jack Thompson, Attorney says:

Sorry to inconvenience you nerds with facts, but here they are: The original complaint was filed by Alabama counsel and by us two Miami attorneys as pro hac vice applicants, as Alabama counsel told us to do. The judge granted our pro hac vice applications, as I was admitted as counsel for the three cops' families. Those are the facts.

I did not ever represent the killer, and anyone with a brain who can read knows that.

All we have here are lies by the reporter and by anonymous cowards who have no earthly idea what happened in this case.

Jack Thompson

PS: What's the straitjacket for?

Talouin says:

"Bradley was reporting on a kid in Alabama who had shot a couple of cops, and Thompson said he could prove that the video game Grand Theft Auto made him do it."

True. If you watch the interview this is almost a direct quote.

"On 60 Minutes, Thompson represented himself as the boy's attorney."

False, Thompson was representing the families of the desceased.

"Problem was: He hadn't been granted the right to practice law in Alabama, nor was he the attorney of record."

True. Refer to the above mentioned section of Judge Tunis' referee's report.

Josh says:

Oh Jack. Poor you.

Please, one misunderstanding in one article, and you get your panties all in a bunch. This is why you are getting disbarred. You consider everything a personal attack, and thus you must pursue some baseless vendetta against anyone and everything.

But then again, you're right. I have no earthly idea what happened in that case. However, I know that those people that are going to disbarr you have all of the paperwork right in front of them, laying everything out in excruciating detail. So really, as long as they've got it covered, the world will right itself by removing you from your laughable attempt at the profession of law.

Sortableturnip says:

Oh, I see Jack, so the Court is lying and you're telling the truth....based on your track record of lying and deceit, I think I would believe the Court before I would believe you.

Micheal Ramier says:

Jack, you are lying yet again. Ever clue that you in your nutty little world (hence the straight-jacket) that utterly false statements are getting you into trouble?

Gryphon Osiris says:

Sadly Jack, you forget that you need to have another lawyer undersign any law suit that you submitt, because the Florida Supreme Court has ordered such because you like to spam them with fillings that range from gay porn to a infantile picture book thing. Now, either there is a vast conspiracy against you on all levels of government, or you are acting like an ass.

Occam's Razor time, lets see if you can guess the right answer.

Yes, that's quite right, hence why I pointed out the fact that the article is mistaken.

You've successfully avoided my point which is that the article is more easily construed as mistaken rather than an attempt to defame you, and if you had at least tried to conduct yourself politely you may have garnered more sympathy.

You have further ignored the fact that you yourself have been guilty of far worse in terms of fabrication, so you might not want to throw stones from inside your glass house.

To address your point, I believe your complaint lies around the article stating "On 60 Minutes, Thompson represented himself as the boy's attorney." No, you didn't do this (hence your tantrum), but you did say you were directly associated with the case, which at that point you weren't - the 60 Minutes interview took place quite some time before your license was granted, and the 60 minutes report quite clearly stated that you said you were 'bringing the suit'. I find it a point of some amusement that you lied to get that license by telling the Alabama bar that you had no previous disciplinary proceedings against you, which you know you did.

So, some decorum if you please, Jack - jumping up and calling people liars with no effort to find the facts is not only rude, but in your case a special kind of hypocrisy.

Sirius says:

Damn, forgot to put my name on that one - my bad.

HarmlessBunny says:

*claps* well spoken, Sirius.

RDerDavis says:

Jack, you remind me of a case I have been working on in my local district court. I have been organizing a file for a man who was sent to prison for 12 years to life. Since then the guy has filed over 25 civil suits against the state.

Is the man innocent? Maybe, but it doesn't matter because his idiocy in filing all of this endless litigation and personal attacks against judges and court employees alike have gotten him written off as a kook.

Do you have a point in your crusade against violence and porn? I think you do, but you are such an idiot that it completely undermines any good you try to do. Your utter lack of knowledge on how the legal system works and seemingly disregard for compassion destroys any credibility you have.

It's funny, because you really do help video game publishers when you make ridiculous claims and then attack everyone and everything in your path.

I'm not really writing this for you, however, because it's doubtful you will even be able to understand what I am writing. This is evidenced by the fact that all you seem to care about is defending yourself on one non-issue over the course of these comments while you miss the big picture.

In short, you are a disgrace to the legal community and I hope you get permanently disbarred.

JackDon'tKnowJack says:

@Jack Thompson:

Waddaya mean, "What's the straitjacket for?" It's for stark, raving lunatics like you. You ain't only crazy, Jack, you ain't none too bright, are you?.
