Dolphins Lose, Pennington Sucks
Around the middle of the third quarter Sunday, nine Miami-Dade cops marched into my section at the Dolphins game and dragged off a vociferous Jets fan, who flashed the crowd a victory sign as he headed for the calaboose.
That kinda said it all. Sunday's Dolphin game, which the team lost to the Jets 20 to 14, was interesting and fun to watch, but ultimately depressing. The defense showed some spark, particularly Channing Crowder. And the team's tight ends, Anthony Fasano and David Martin, played beautifully. Indeed there was a sense of competence lacking in last year's 1 and 15 season.
But the play of quarterback Chad Pennington, and the running backs Ronny Brown and Ricky Williams, stunk. Pennington had no right throwing some ofthe balls that he floated down the field. He barely hit a wide receiver all day. And no matter how hard Ronnie and Ricky tried -- by the way, is it just me or do those sound like sandbox names? -- they couldn't get more than a few yards.
Hey, wasn't that number one draft pick, Jake Long, supposed to open up the offense. Uh-uh. Didn't happen. Pennington was regularly on his ass, too.
The good news is that I expect this to continue. The actions of a drunken guy who was led out of my section by the cops before the Jets fan (it was an eventful afternoon, there, what can I say?) spoke volumes. "Go Dolphins!" he bellowed, then passed out in a cop's arms. Welcome to the Parcells era!
