Florida Supreme Court Takes Three Amendments Off the Ballot

With nine proposed amendments to the State constitution set for a vote this November, the ballot was looking a little crowded. The Florida Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, gave the ballot a little bit of breathing room by removing three.

Two of the barred amendments would have allowed state funding of religious and other private institutions. The other would have cut 25 percent from homeowners' property tax bills.

The amendments were placed on the ballot by the Taxation and Budget Reform Commission, a body that meets once every 20 years. The court ruled that the commission overstepped its powers by doing so.

Voters still have a lot of other issues to weigh in on at the polls. Six other amendments remain, including one outlawing gay marriage.
