McCain Won't Talk To Spain (Or Thinks It's In Latin America)
During an interview with Spanish language station Radio Caracol 1260 am McCain said that he would not commit to meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero.
Late Wednesday night, news made its way from the other side of the Atlantic that John McCain, in an interview with a Spanish outlet, had made a series of bizarre responses to a question regarding that country's prime minister.
"Would you be willing to meet with the head of our government, Mr. Zapatero?" the questioner asked, in an exchange now being reported by several Spanish outlets.
McCain proceeded to launch into what appeared to be a boilerplate declaration about Mexico and Latin America -- but not Spain -- pressing the need to stand up to world leaders who want to harm America.
The exchange was so bizarre that some thought he had confused Zapatero with The Zapatista Army, a Mexican rebel group or that he thinks Spain is a Latin American country.
But McCain representatives are claiming he meant what he said, and what he said is that he is unsure if he would meet with the leader of an ally country. Which is fucking bonkers.
Now, relations between Spain and America have been chilly since Zapatero, a Democratic socialist, took office and withdrew Spanish troops from Iraq. The Bush administration has also taken issue with the fact that a Zapatero's Minister of Foreign Affairs would not meet with Cuban dissidents during a trip to America.
However, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice meet with Zapatero in 2007, and in a lead up to that meeting Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried said, "We look at Spain's transformation as one of the great European success stories of the past generation. We look at Spain as a natural ally, and we have a common agenda."
So McCain's refusal to commit to any sort of meeting with Zapatero is a big departure even from the Bush agenda. Barack Obama has taken heat from saying he'd be willing to meet with the leaders of non-ally countries, and now John McCain has gone off the other ideological deep end by claiming he may not be willing to meet with ally countries. What the hell?
