Film Festivals Pick up Arthur Teele Jr. Doc
When Arthur Teele Jr. killed himself in the lobby of the Miami Herald on July 27, 2005, I found myself in the middle of the media maelstrom that engulfed the city in the aftermath of his suicide. After all, I was the author of the cover story detailing the state criminal investigation into allegations Teele was accepting kickbacks in exchange for giving out contracts through the Overtown Community Redevelopment Agency. The article came out that balmy afternoon when Teele walked into the Miami Herald lobby and shot himself in the head. Ever since I've been linked to Teele's suicide, with some outraged supporters blaming me for his unfortunate demise. But I have no regrets. It's all part of the game. I had the opportunity to reflect and share my insights into Teele, perhaps the most enigmatic and charismatic leader this community has ever seen, during an interview for Sam Rega and Josh Miller, two University of Miami film students who made "Miami Noir: The Arthur Teele Story." Their captivating documentary, which featured reenacted scenes of Teele's last days, is making the film festival circuit rounds. Last year, "Miami Noir" took first place in the international collegiate competition at last year's Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. At the end of the month, the film will be featured at the 2009 San Diego Black Film Festival and in February will be shown at the 2009 Macon Film & Video Festival in Georgia.
