Dennis Moss Picks Committee Chairs

Dennis Moss is done putting together the new make-up of the county commission's committees and I'm impressed with most of his selections. In case you don't know, the commissioners use the committee system to hammer out decisions that ultimately impact our tax dollars, from formulating new ways to tax us to doling out patronage in the form of lucrative contracts. As the new Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman, or the Big Triple C, for short, Dennis Moss has the authority to reshape the committees and name which commissioners get to head the panels.

Moss has reduced the number of committees from eight to seven. He put Katy Sorenson and Carlos Gimenez, two impartial, super smart commissioners, in charge of overseeing the county's budget, growth and day-to-day operations. Commissioner Sally Heyman, a former state legislator, to chair the Health, Public Safety and Intergovernmental Committee. Moss allies Audrey Edmonson and Barbara Jordan, the two black female commissioners, will head up the committees overseeing affordable housing, community development, mass transit and county roads. Can't day I am too thrilled with Dorrin Rolle being installed as the overlord of the county airports and the Port of Miami.

Left out in the cold: Natacha Seijas. The commissioner from Miami Lakes has chaired a committee ever since the system was reintroduced by the county commission in 2002. Not this time around. Although she is vice-chairwoman for the Government Operations committee.
