Commissioners to Meet on Sex Offenders

It has been almost two years since New Times exposed a disturbing, state-mandated colony of sex offenders living under the Julia Tuttle Causeway. Since then, city commissioners have received dozens of angry letters, international news programs have aired footage, and the amount of banished men under the bridge has doubled. When it comes to state policy, though, zero has changed.

Tomorrow, Miami City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff promises to take a better-late-than-never approach by proposing a resolution that could put some pressure on the State to solve the problem. "We've been trying to lobby to Tallahassee and get the attention of our Governor to stop this," he says. "It's not appropriate to have anyone living under bridges."

He adds: "I don't think there is a short-term solution."

Should the resolution pass, the city would ask the state to create a committee dedicated to solely to studying and resolving the issue. "If a study needs to be done," he explains, "It should be done quickly."

Yeah...quickly.
