Noooooooo! Indie Film in Miami

Categories: Culture

I was at Out of the Blue cafe the other day for lunch and happened to overhear a girl at the eight-top next to me complain that, now that the Miami Int'l Film Festival is over, there's no place to see independent/art films in Miami. Quoth Hollywood: Noooooooooo!

For those of you already in the Nooooooo!, here are two great events, one screening and one panel-style conversation:

"A Conversation with Filmmaker Brian Hecker"
TONIGHT: Wed, April 1 @ 6:30pm
Hecker, a South Florida native, will give a free talk at the Miami Science Museum. Hecker's first feature film, "Bart Got a Room", starring William H. Macy and Jennifer Tilly, debuts this Friday at AMC Sunset Place and Aventura. (The film was also shot in FL.) Hecker's next project is reported to be a Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle about the guy who invented Atari, so this may be your last chance to hear him speak in a relaxed venue.

"Medecine for Melancholy" at the Miami Beach Cinematheque
Friday, April 3 @7pm and 9pm
Includes Live Q&A with Director Barry Jenkins (who grew up in Liberty City)
The film stars The Daily Show's Wyatt Cenac and was originally shown at last year's Borscht Film Festival but, due to a projection issue, was cut off before the end. The festival circuit has been in love with this film, as it's the kind of romantic flick Hollywood used to be good at it in the 30's and 40's.
