Most of the snakes loose in the National park are former pets that were dumped by their owners, and now compete for resources with indigenous species, if they're not busy eating them. They have a taste for raccoons, muskrats, cotton rats, and most infamously, the occasional alligator.
Joining Nelson will be his fellow Florida Senator Mel Martinez as well as Gov. Charlie Crist and Rep. Kendrick Meek: the two front runners in the race to replace Martinez.
So, one thing is a safe bet: Florida's senators will be united against the python threat until at least 2012 when Nelson is up for re-election. Who knows what parcel mouth will challenge him then.
