Obama Appoints Miami-Raised Miguel Diaz as Envoy to the Vatican

President Obama's relationship with religion is complex, but you can't accuse him of not being thoughtful.

When it comes to appointing an ambassador to the Holy See, all but President George W. Bush's third and final appointee have been chosen much like any other Ambassador -- big time donors, friends of the President or other career politicians. President's hand out ambassadorships like thank you note. But Obama's choice to fill the position is something of a surprise.

Miguel Diaz was born in Havana, and raised in Miami. He attended St. Thomas University during undergrad, and for a time also taught at Barry University. He's currently on staff at St. John's University in Minnesota. Catholic.org describes Diaz as a pro-life Democrat, who supported Obama's candidacy.

While he was vocal in his support for Obama, his role as a Catholic theologian sets him apart from most previous nominees. Not to mention that he'll be the first Latino to hold the job.

Some early talk mentioned Caroline Kennedy as a potential nominee. Which wouldn't be that surprising. She is the daughter of America's only Catholic president. Then again, that would have been just about the biggest thing on her resume.
