PETA Grasps at Cat Killer Straws to Push Anti-Dissection Campaign

So, on the heels of the Cat Killer hubbub along comes PETA to push their campaign to ban animal dissection from science classes. I am not unsympathetic to the cause. I mean, I don't remember anything I learned by dissecting a frog, but unless they're pushing picture of sexy vegetarians in swimwear, PETA sure makes it hard to love them.
There press release offers no sympathy or condolences to the cats or their owners, and simply aims straight for the sensationalized drama with this opening shot: "Tomorrow's violent criminals may be learning dangerous lessons in today's biology classes."
Do you hear that? Your kids are becoming violent criminals thanks to a class they probably sleep through!
Then PETA settles down a little and makes some decent points.
- Research shows that dissection fosters callousness toward animals and that childhood animal abuse is linked to violent behavior toward humans and animals later in life. Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer openly attributed his fascination with mutilation and murder to classroom dissections.
- The millions of animals who are used in school dissections come from biological supply houses, which breed some animals, capture many in the wild, and obtain others from animal shelters. These animals suffer tremendously as they are transported, confined, and cruelly killed in order to be sold to schools for dissection
Ok, point taken. However, Tyler Weinman, the cat killer suspect, hasn't been convicted of anything yet and there's no evidence attributing his alleged activities to his classroom pursuits.
