Ros-Lehtinen Helps Reintroduce ENDA with Protection for Transgender Individuals

Categories: Politicks
It's quite ironic that so many so-called liberal politicians still have such a hard time talking about or defending the rights of transsexual people. Why should it be such a struggle to pass legislation that ensures people won't be discriminated against by potential employers on the basis of gender identity? You might not agree with everyone's lifestyle choices, but can't you agree everyone deserves a fair shake at employment?

In 2007, the Democrat-controlled House passed a version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that left protection on the basis of gender identity on the cutting-room floor. It ended up dying in the Senate.

Now, a group of representatives including Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is introducing a new version of the bill that includes gender identity. The bill has ten other cosponsors, which includes, in addition to Ros-Lehtninen, three other Republicans.

President Obama has also signaled he supports the proposed legislation.
