Miami-Dade Transit Discovers the Power of Email and Text Messages

In Boston, citizens can now download an iPhone app that lets them send their complaints directly to city hall. In Miami, we now have... um... text messages and emails to let you know when Metrorail is down. 

"The Miami-Dade Transit Rider Alerts system is another example of how we're using the latest technology to improve communication with our customers by providing them with real-time information about service issues that could impact their commute with us," says MDT Director Harpal S. Kapoor.

Email and text messages are the "latest technology"? Is it 1999 again? New Times sends restaurant picks from our food critique via text message. It's about time you joined the game, MDT. 

Seriously, there's already an unofficial twitter feed that provides this service. 

Setting aside both Kapoor's we're-on-the-cutting-edge hyperbole and our own snark, the service that sends you messages about your daily commute can be helpful. You can sign up for them here.

Indeed, Portland's transit system provides an API that developers can use to create iPhone apps, web apps, or whatever you can think of that tells you when any bus is coming (the buses all have GPS) and any alerts pertinent to your route.

But hey, it's nice to see MDT rocket into the 20th century.

I think it's great that they are doing this. I also signed up for recycling reminders from the County, and they send me an email the night before I have to put out my recycling containers. Helps alot.
