Farid Khavari Wants to Put Florida in the Banking Business, Himself in the Gov's Mansion

Categories: Politicks

If you love watching poorly produced late-night infomercials, Farid Khavari might be the gubernatorial candidate for you.

Khavari, a Miami resident, announced his candidacy today as a Democrat, and his entire platform seems to be instituting a Bank of the State of Florida, which a stern-sounding announcer clearly lays out in this two-hour minute video. Yes, the main, and so far only, plank of his campaign is a bit of socialism.

North Dakota is the only state in the nation that owns and operates its own banks, and by most accounts, even in the face of an economic crisis, seems to be doing just fine. However, the Bank of North Dakota caters to the needs of the state and municipalities and poses little threat to privately owned consumer banks.

Khavari's idea seems far different and would directly serve consumers: offering mortgages, credit cards, and loans.

We'll leave it up to you to decide whether it's a good idea or not, but we'll never understand why some one-issue candidates attach an issue to their campaigns. Wouldn't it be more effective to forgo the headaches of a long-shot personal campaign and instead more naturally build up grassroots support for an idea?
