Teaching Assistant Says Club B.E.D. Gave Her the Boot Because She's Fat

Lorraine Nevot knows that feeling well. The heavyset, 27-year-old teaching assistant says Club B.E.D. turned her away from a Monday-night party because she's fat. It bothered her so much she posted an ad on Craigslist recruiting other women who've had similar experiences. She hopes to file a lawsuit. "If you're overweight or ugly, they won't let you in," she says. "I felt like crying."
The club's operations director, Nathan Forster, argues the Washington Avenue hot spot is open to everyone. "It's the doorman's discretion how we choose to represent the club... It's mostly about being dressed appropriately."
Last month, Lorraine heard about a free ladies night at the club. The place is soaked in red lighting and features musical guests such as Rick Ross and Brian McKnight. On this night, there was a free dinner. Lorraine thought it sounded fun, so she arrived early with her sister. "We were the first ones there. We were in nice dress shirts, makeup, and accessories."
(Forster contends the Monday-night dinner was open only to guests of promoters.)
A woman at the door told them it was too early to get in, so they waited. When other people arrived, the bouncer shuffled the others into the club in front of the sisters. Though they arrived first, the bouncer sent them to the back of the crowd. It happened over and over, Lorraine says.
Finally, she confronted the door girl. "Is this because I'm overweight?" she asked. According to Lorraine, the woman responded, "I'm sorry, honey, there's nothing I can do." So Lorraine took it one step further: She called police.
Cops arrived and essentially laughed at her, she says. They termed it a civil matter and made no police report.
In the past year, B.E.D. has had one federal discrimination case filed against it. Stephen Karakis, a wheelchair-bound South Florida man, claimed he was "denied full and equal access" to the club in January. The case was later dismissed. And so far, Lorraine has gotten no response to her Craigslist ad.
Still seething, she adds, "This is discrimination."

A bunch of my friends and I were on a birthday list since we were friends with one of the promoters. We all had no problem getting in. All, that is except for one of our girlfriends who happened to be overweight. The bouncer told her that her shoes were not appropriate and that if she changed into heals he would allow her entry into the club. She happens to be 5"10 and was wearing black,silk ballet slippers. They were dressy enough. She didn't make a fuss and rushed home to change her shoes. About 10 minutes later she showed up alone at the door in heals and the bouncer completely ignored her. A friend even quietly offered him money to let her in and he still rejected her. This is a girl that had her name on the list! She was pretty embarrassed at that point and headed home early.
It pretty much ruined the birthday girls night since they were best friends!
It is not discrimination. How can you expect to be treated the same as a woman who is thin in a culture where thin is the ideal? Much less the city where body image is the be all end all?
Why did she call the cops...??? Isn't there more important things they could be doing like keeping drunks off the road? The club can refuse service to anyone. It is a private club. Not everyone finds Fat Girls pretty...just like not everyone finds brunettes pretty. Get a life...if you wanna roll with the pretty girls..stop stuffing the B&J's down your gullet and go work out. Bet the gym will let you in ...they probably will not have a Free dinner though!
Talk about the Entitlement Generation. This whiny snot can't understand that maybe she doesn't have the RIGHT to get into a club. Last time I checked, they were private businesses and being fat is not a protected category. In most cases, it's a choice. I say that as an obese person. I don't plan on entering a swinsuit modelling contest anytime soon, but am I whining?
This is all about getting handouts. If you're going for free dinner, then they get to pick who they feed. Clubs are businesses -- not public works projects. Not exactly shocked that she works in a public school. Probably raised on the idea that everyone must tolerate and accept everyone else.
She should be glad that 1) the cops actually showed and 2) they didn't arrest her for making a frivolous complaint.
Can The New Times get the 911 tape? I bet it goes like this... "Hey, I'm outside this club getting very hungry and they won't let me in. Send help now, before I eat someone!"

Not to be mean or anything; but instead of going to free dinners; she should exercise along the beach. Perhaps the SoBe-club she passes can be a carrot?

50 years ago, many establishments would put signs at the door stating "Coloreds not allowed." And that is now illegal, to deny someone service because of their race.
Fat isn't always a "choice". People with thyroid problems can gain weight easily and have problems losing weight as well.
Why is it that it's ok to refuse someone a service, even if it's free food. She still had to pay entrance, pay for her drinks. But apparently if you're fat you're money isn't good everywhere?
To me, it sounds like flat out discrimination.

The club had every right to deny her, it is their property. They have the right as much as a child care centre has to not allow registered sex offenders onto their property.

Yes some people do have thyroid problems, so dont take your thyroid meds with a bag of doritos and diet soda. And by the why fatties have their own club they can go to, its called "OLD COUNTRY BUFFET". Although they are not welcome there, they are not refused for the 1st hour. So, if you dont wanna be discriminated against for being fat, lose wieght and stop crying. Remember welfare is for fat losers. Free food. free health care. free housing. And if you want a raise have another unwanted child, (up to 3). I for one would never stand and humiliate myself at any SOBE club. Just to say I was at "Club X" at south beach over the weekend. The only reason I am writing on this blog is because I find it very cruel what people are wriing about this cruel. Get a life and leave this poor girl alone; she just wanted to try and get in to a south beach club and have a good time. So i can imagine how they can get when free food is being kept from them...
My only advise to this fat teacher girl is, STOP EATING SO MUCH!!! and get yourself a trainner or gastric bypass...

someone said we should worry about more important things rather than this nonsense and i agree. but i also think that the hatred and callous attitude towards fat people needs to be addressed.

Seriously, there are worst things in the world then not being allowed in a club, I undertand where the discrimination comes in, and believe me, I know it's fucked up, but unfortunately that's Miami for you. If you are a heavyset girl and you're obviously going there just to eat the free meal, if you are not with someone attractive, there is no way in hell you are getting in. Face the facts girls, your fat and your not welcomed. I bet you do this "free meal" thing all the time, only it came back to bite you on your obessed ass.
