Like thousands of other readers of the
Miami Herald, I was charmed Friday
when I read of the 20-year, multimillion-dollar effort to spruce up downtown sidewalks. World-famous artist Burle Marx designed about a mile of walkways similar to those on Rio's Copacabana for Biscayne Boulevard between the Arsht Center and the InterContinental Hotel -- downtown's beating heart.
Then I took a look.
The sidewalks, particularly the northern stretch, are full, and I mean full, of utility markings and other spray-painted messes that will be virtually impossible to remove. The
Herald story noted the Downtown Development Authority is planning a trust to care for the sidewalks. That's just like this town -- prepare for the hurricane after it's hit. For more pictures of the sidewalk mess, follow the jump.
