Maurice Ferre Officially Enters Senate Race

If you asked us a few months ago which Miami mayor would make a Senate run, we would have guessed Manny Diaz. Boy, would we have been wrong. Maurice Ferre, who was mayor from 1973 to 1985, has officially thrown his hat into the ring to challenge Kendrick Meek in the Democratic primary.

Ferre promised to make an announcement about a possible Senate run "the modern way." And what do you know -- today we received an email (modern technology, that right there) titled "Maurice Ferre Announces Candidacy for the U.S. Senate."

"At a time when Florida faces historic challenges, it's time to be bold. That is what has defined my entire public service career, and that is what our state needs now in Washington," Ferre said in the email. "I'm ready to fight for Florida's future."

Ferre is one of the oldest men in the race, but he has the requisite Twitter, Facebook, and online videos. And we must say, that welcome video on his homepage might be the best one we've seen yet in this election. Ferre is -- imagine this -- actually talking about the issues: not getting a fair share of the stimulus package, rising insurance costs, and all of that.
