We usually use this column to recklessly mock regional idiots who accidentally shoot their toes off or are busted for running pathetic Ponzi schemes. But this week, we're issuing a public service announcement.
Lovelorn ladies of South Florida, do not date the man whose pictures you see here. Even if -- especially if -- he shows up knowing your favorite flavor of ice cream and claiming to be the bishop of the Archdiocese of Miami or a back-up catcher for the Marlins or the guy who invented the inflatable air mattress. Turn around and run to the nearest courthouse and get a restraining order. Not that that would stop him.
This week's feature story describes several episodes of weird and out-of-control violence occuring on the Miami Gardens campus of Florida Memorial University. Among them: the creepy tale of one female student's involvement with Jervon Antonio Smith, an Opa-locka resident who got all Mark-Wahlberg-in-Fear on her ass.
Smith had stalked the student, named Phylise, ever since he saw her in an FMU commercial, she later testified in court. He gathered information at a local barbershop in order to know everything about her before he accidentally/on purpose ran into her and persuaded her to go on a date in the summer of 2002. When Smith wasn't claiming to be a pastor, he said he was a detective, Phylise testified, but she discovered the badge he flashed was from a former security guard gig.
Some of Smith's wooing tactics seem a tad unconventional. For instance, he flattened the tires on her Honda, Phylise claimed, smacked her around at her part-time job, stole her cell phone, and threatened her life. "Bitch, you going to be pushing daisies" -- which Phylise claims Smith told her several times -- just doesn't have the same friendly tone to a potential girlfriend as, say, "Call you on Saturday, then?"
When Phylise dumped him, Smith waited for her outside her dorm room, dragged her from her car, and stomped on her face. He kicked loose four teeth, and Phylise had to have reconstructive surgery to repair her upper lip. He spent 270 days in prison for the attack.
Court records reveal Smith might be South Florida's least eligible bachelor. In 1998, he was named in a paternity suit. In 2006, another woman filed a restraining order against him, claiming repeat violence. That same year, he was convicted of making threatening phone calls -- the ultimate creep cliché.
As if it all weren't bad enough, Smith is still desperately trying to pass himself off as a man of God. We found this website -- turn down your speakers unless your boss is really into new-age gospel -- in which "Dr. Jervon A. Smith" -- we're calling bullshit on that Ph.D., buddy -- poses like a serene Montel Williams clone and purports to be the founder of "Truth in the World Ministries." Florida corporation records show he registered that church in 2006. But a Google search on its address turns up this crappy-looking Opa-locka domicile, which we're guessing is his home/stalking operation headquarters.
If you're still not convinced, we present the following video ripped from Smith's website. Just imagine him doing this irate dance in your front yard instead of a church -- and there's no gospel drowning him out, just his frantic declaration that he'd rather spend his days at the Everglades Correctional Institute than without you. Think your neighbors would be down with that?
So what...let go and swallow it! That's something the misses should have done years ago and you wouldn't be in the mess.
Thank you for the update Phylise. However, I was too a victim of Jervon and can vouch that he is not who he says that he is. Or at least he wasn't at the time. He verbally abused me and was very controlling; he stole from me and slandered my name. What kind of person would do that? I do believe in forgiving and know that God can change people if that's what the individual wants. And I pray that this is what has happened to him.
Alright, enough is enough! Who am I? I, have sat back long enough and would be considered an infidel to allow this one sided deformation of character to continue without giving my stance on the matter. We all have short comings typically because we are mortal human beings subject to mistakes, frailties and casualties. Be it lying, stealing, murder, etc., no one is perfect! I believe if anyone has the right to fire-off about Pastor Smith it would be me but I choose not to because I am reminded of the favor that God has towards His chosen men of the gospel. Therefore, I leave all judgment in the Hands of the Father. Who am I? I am a Minister who asks that you allow me to point you in the direction of King David. Here was a man who indulged in pornography, he stands and watches Bathsheba take a bath in the nude and if that werent enough sends his boys to retrieve her into his quarters where hed unleashed a few of his soldiers off in her and had her husband finished off with the rest. And he deserves to be KING? I watched Gods take on this biblically and boldly asked Him about it because the bible continuously refers to Bathsheba as the wife of Uriah; but has anyone taken notice that God never makes David turn loose the dame? Not only does he takes and makes her his own, but after the miscarriage, God has the audacity to bless this union with Solomon, one of the richest and wisest men to ever breathe on this side of creation. And Solomon was born to build God a temple. Sounds like favor to me. Folks, God rarely cares about what the world thinks of his men. David was a murder, liar, master manipulator, a whore and a worshipper but above all, David was a man after Gods own heart. This bible verse was declared by God not by David. Most times we judge people based on how long weve known them, while eradicating the years theyve lived and known themselves; some living through unbearable situations and circumstances such as abuse, neglect, poverty and lack, ever wondered what your character would be like after living through such conditions? We must become sensitive to the needs of others. When you encounter an individual who you feel is not living up to par with Gods principles that is the opportune time that you pray for them not piss on them, trust me, theyve seen plenty of golden showers before you came along. This measly article cannot express even half of what Ive been through and is nothing more than some public information back in 2002, which stemmed from a recent issue and has no significance to this man that God chose. Forgiveness is an essential part of life and a part that was rendered to this Man of God several years ago. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Pastor Smith regarding this article since everyone is pointing fingers as though we have room in our lives and our past reeks the scent of ROSE petals and Jervons character is a more suitable candidate for such slander so Ill get on the bus with GUS and .Pastor Smith responded to me that he was not oblivious of this interview nor had he spoken with anyone, to him, it seemed like an attack from the enemy to try and mar his name. And I believed him. Why? Because I never spoken with any reporter about this article as well. Who am I?
I AM Phylise.
Rev. Johnson I'm sure he may be a powerful man of god but he is also a big liar and manipulator.
I hope god can change his life and his misleading ways.
This is very crazy how the devil are attacking men and women of God in this way its sad i know this man of God personally also and he is a very powerful preacher of Gods word and i hope that whatever God has for him will come to pass.
Wow... I personally know him. This is too crazy but he does tell a lot of lies. He also told me that he was a pastor.
