Lawmakers Propose Full Casinos on Florida Beaches

A full service casino resort may someday soon find itself on Miami Beach. Ironic considering the lawmaker baking the new gambling rules, Fort Lauderdale Republican State Rep. Ellyn Bogdanoff, campaigned on an anti-gambling platform.

Bogdanoff, backed by Las Vegas mogul Sheldon Adelson, wants to allow five to seven casino resorts to be built along Florida beaches, granted that the local community approves them. Bogdanoff thinks the casino resorts would boost tourism and provide competition for the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which has a near monopoly on gambling in the state.

Adelson says Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale would be the top two possibilities. Though any beachfront areas within 25 minutes of a major airport would be prime property.

The plan is far from reality, as Tallahassee is still trying to hash out a gaming pact with the Seminoles, but top lawmakers, including Gov. Charlie Crist, seem open to the possibility.
