Proposed Law Would Deny Tax Breaks to Films That Feature Gay Characters

biriidcage.jpg
Well, our hopes for a sequel to The Birdcage just got dampened. That's because a new bill that increases tax incentives to lure television and movie production to Florida would deny those tax breaks to films that feature gay characters. And unlike the ultraconservative Republican politician in The Birdcage, it doesn't seem the bill's sponsor, Rep. Stephen Precourt, will have a change of heart anytime soon.

Current laws prevent tax breaks for films that feature smoking, sex, nudity, or profane language. The proposed changes make Florida guidelines seem even more like the Hays Code that censored Hollywood from the the '30s to the '60s. Thankfully, Precourt hasn't borrowed more ideas from that censorship office and written in language that would also disallow interracial relationships, suggestive dancing, and "lustful kisses."

"Precourt says he's not targeting the gay community but that shows with gay characters would not be something he'd want 'to invest public dollars in,' " reports the Associated Press.

Besides not offering tax breaks to films that "exhibit or implied act" of nontraditional family values, films with gratuitous violence would also be left out.

In recent years, Florida has slipped from third in the country in terms of film production, only behind California and New York, to out of the top ten. Other states have aggressively offered more generous tax credits.

Recently, the cast and crew of the show Burn Notice, one of the few TV shows to actually shoot in Florida, lobbied the legislature to increase tax incentives for show business productions. They claim they've paid nearly $25 million in wages to Floridians and booked more than 7,000 nights in hotel rooms during the shooting of the show. The show received about $5.2 million in tax breaks last fiscal year but could find itself out of luck depending on how the "gratuitous violence" clause is interpreted and wouldn't be free to introduce LGBT characters.

The bill, which also has a companion bill in the Senate, still has to go through various committees before it reaches the House floor.

Well when they drop out of the teens to the 40's in terms of film production, I bet Florida becomes a lot more accepting of non-traditional family values.

But does that mean that a show with a non-married couple living together is barred from tax incentives too? What about one that discusses evolution???

Is he an idiot or am I?

One of us doesn't understand the difference between the potential net loss when you "invest public dollars" and the HUGE net gain of a film production coming to town, minus a few tax breaks.

"In recent years, Florida has slipped from third in the country in terms of film production..."

Well, this should help.

So move production to a state that will offer tax incentives. Simple enough. When they are no longer able to operate the state without state income taxes then the residents will vote for smoeone else. by then it will be hard to reverse the damage.
Another reason my family left florida

Wonder when Mr. Precourt is going to have his little bathroom incident. Seems the more anti-gay a politician is, the deeper in the closet they are.

Who the hell elects these right-wing assholes? I'm sure if Precourt had his way, he'd scrap tax breaks for films that feature African Americans, Latinos and Jews, too.

If this bill passes, the film industry in Florida is dead.

Just what I was thinking. I got 50$ that says that within a year, Mr. Precourt is going to be busted leaving a leather daddy bar with astroglide running out the back of his pants....The tearful confession is sooooo tasty, closeted Repubs.

This law really makes no sense, but from the article I learn that the current laws prevent tax breaks for films that feature smoking, sex, nudity, or profane language as well.

I'm sure there are many other States that will be happy to offer tax breaks to have movies shot there.

The voters of Florida can show Precourt that THEY might want to invest public dollars in by voting him out of office.

How about suggesting that I don't want my tax dollars spent on anything to do with Traditional Family Values at least in the way it is referred to here? That is equally valid.

Who or what ever made the TFV proselytizers the holder of the Holy Grail of what is preferable in life? In my world they are society's worse nightmare

The use of the term Traditional Family Values has little to do with the "traditions" and "families" and "values" they are trying to invoke, and all to do with bigotry, narrow-mindedness, right-wing extremism, religious zealotry and lack of respect for others to live their lives peacefully as they chose.

Until we realise that these extremists have hoodwinked and hijacked the moral higher ground for their own narrow agenda we are going to continue to hear and have to deal with this kind of BS.
Somehow they cannot let others continue on with their lives with respect; it must be some kind of insecurity or megalomania; whatever it is it disrespectful in its exclusiveness.

It is time to retake the reigns of societal and political control: the former tussling, but relative cohesive cooperation between middle-ground Conservatives and left-leaning Liberals did a better job for decades, through much of the last century, at running our society than the wing-nuts at the other end of the spectrum who are relentlessly grasping and lobbying for power and who seem to think the only way to go is their way or the highway.

They don't and never had had the moral higher ground.
I say: hell no, let's not take it anymore!

Joe says:

Since Sherri thinks sexual orientation is "preference", I wonder if that means she considered all the options and has CHOSEN to be straight. She clearly doesn't believe she was just born straight, because sexual "preference" is a choice, right?

Regardless, there is a difference between denying tax credits to films which feature truly unhealthy, detrimental behavior (smoking, drinking) and featuring sexual orientation which has not been proven, in any way, to negatively affect ANYONE'S quality of living by ANY respectable, non-biased scientific study of integrity. Again, just because someone doesn't like something doesn't mean they have the right to dictate to the rest of us what is right/wrong/viewable/deserving of equal treatment and taxation/etc.

The bill's supporters should be worried about their job. Not only is such discrimination illegal, it is likely to stir up calls to vote them out of office. Alexis take Bible context out of contact to justify immorality still does not change the the fact that being gay IS A CHOICE and IMMORAL! Rally all you want, but Stephen did the right thing! Just like you liberals get very defensive at the point of violence at anyone who depises liberals forcing the world to accept the gay lifestyle! But god forbid anyone even mentioning the word "bible" or "God" and here comes the hypocrisy if being "non tolerant"! Immoral lifestyle does NOT need to be rewarded gay or straight! God Bless Florida!!!!!

If you are gay and live in Florida,
You should not pay any taxes...
because
if films do not reflect YOUR life,
You don't owe the state government anything

Posted On: Saturday, Mar. 13 2010 @ 3:57AM
Joe says:

Alexis-
It is YOUR opinion that being gay is a choice, not something inborn with some people. In fact, all rigorous scientific study shows basic differences in chemical makeup in the brain proving that it is no more "a choice" than a person's eye color. Remember, one's opinion is just that...and not the rule everyone should live by. Just because YOU say something is wrong and immoral doesn't mean you're necessarily right. We're a nation of diverse opinions and attitudes, and we have to keep that in mind if we really care about fellowship and our relationship with God's children.

Some people don't like hearing "the Bible" invoked as a reason for a decision made in politics/law because religious morals/rules are NOT SUPPOSED to dictate how our politics/laws are built. That's a basic tenant from the formation of America.

(And btw, some of us posting are Conservatives...don't call me a liberal just because I believe in equality. I learned that principle from Jesus, not a politician.)

Joe: I believe you are reprimanding the wrong person. Alexis was simply answering SHERRI. SHERRI is the right wing, bible thumping, judgemental, hypocritical homophobe.

That being said: This country just keeps moving farther and farther backwards. The people that live here are so hideous that I am embarrassed to admit that I am american. I have become terribly hateful and I can't wait to move out of this hellhole to a country where the people are more evolved and less like SHERRI.

Religion is the root of all evil and will lead to the eventual destruction of the world.

Eric says:

Clearly this guy's going for a, "We do discriminate on the basis of..."

So somebody needs to point out that he's forgotten to add religion to his all-discrimination clause. No tax breaks for Christian films, and then Florida can discriminate against everybody equally. Yay!
