Behold the Top 10 Most Dangerous Spots to Bike in Miami

• Christine, First off, let's start off by saying that you are talking about city biking. True speed biking has its limitations in the City. Unfortunately, this is not Scandinavia regarding the mentality of bikes/bikers. We have such poor biking infrastructure here (unlike Scandinavia) that we have to adapt to a volatile, challenging, dangerous, and mentally violent biking environment. Cars have priority here. It is always a battle for me when I bike from Pace Park down to the Roads to visit friends. I'm unfortunately inventing my own rules as a backlash to the plethora of inconsiderate drivers - but there are still many spots in Miami/Beach where I enjoy biking, so I deal with the bad spots. Granted, one cannot be mentally weak to ride like I do around here. I'm the one who rides in the middle stripes on West Ave, in order to avoid getting hit by the drivers who open their car doors right when I'm driving past them, or they pull their car right out in front of me. No... the middle stripes for me, and the cars that hate that cause it makes them nervous? Tough shit bozo. Use your freakin brain for once instead of being in an alcoholic daze. Middle stripes for me. Still, Sunday morning at sunrise... priceless. BUT... -Always wear a helmet -Get a loud horn for when someone really pisses you off, but be prepared to physically fight them, cause the insecure masculinos will feel small and will need to overcompensate by either challenging you to a fight, or to run you off the road later on. Miami Fight Club in NE 20th St. is the place to go to prepare yourself. -Buy a solid rear view mirror -Night time lights -Ringer for sidewalk riding, Lincoln Road, Espanola Way, Ocean, so these slow poke tourists get out of my freakin way.

• I bike on South Beach all the time and don't feel to unsafe, I just avoid some of the worse sections. There are many quieter streets one can take and at intersections I follow traffic lights and it works out fine. I installed a rear view mirror recently and I love it! I think a problem is that many cyclists do not operate within traffic very well, I used to live in Scandinavia where biking is common and cyclists follow traffic rules, here people ride all over, against traffic, on sidewalks etc. I use hand signals to let cars know where I am turning, and try to be considerate of pedestrians AND cars and I think that makes riding a better experience. I have only had one close call in 15 years on the beach and that was a reckless driver that almost got me.

• I bike in Manhattan all the time. However, I'm relocating to Miami soon. Does it make sense I'm semi-terrified to bike in Miami?

• Good list, biking in Miami Beach is dangerous anytime, but trying to cross 5th St. is pure madness!

• Agreed Two Wheels O'Houlihan. The MacArthur Causeway is a crazy. There is no rhyme or reason to the bike lanes. FDOT has some audacity painting a bike lane on the MacArthur Causeway. Thanks for posting the link Natalie!

• Don't ride on the MacArthur Causeway. Period. The bike lanes begin and end nonsensically and the drivers are insane. The pavement is also covered in broken bottles, metal shards, and other crap. Last year, a cabbie fell asleep at the wheel and plowed into a group of about 15 cyclists. Take the Venetian at all costs. Work on your "hill legs" over on the bridge to Key Biscayne- aka Miami Mountain. And wear a helmet. True, no one looks cool in a helmet, but then again no one looks cool pooping in a bag for the rest of their life. Ride safe!

• Hi Natalie, Where did you get this list? Most of these locations are on Miami Beach. How about the Rickenbacker Causeway? A cyclists dies on average once every few of years here. The MacArthur Causeway should be included on this list too! Bayshore Drive is also a train wreck.
