Gov. Charlie Crist Vetoes SB6

Gov. Charlie Crist has vetoed the Jeb Bush-backed, controversial SB6. The education bill would have eliminated tenure for newly hired teachers, and would have tied a portion of teachers' salaries to test score results.

"I say we must start over. This bill has negatively affected the morale of our parents, teachers and students," Crist said.

The bill was opposed by many teachers and school boards, including Miami-Dade's. About 25 percent of county teachers called out "sick" on Monday to protest the bill.

Though Crist has given some earlier indications that he supported the bill.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Crist's decision to veto the bill could be tied to a possible plan to run as an independent for senator.

Charlie committed political suiside when he vetoed the bill. His own party is calling for his ouster. He pulled an OBOMA move by doing what he wanted reguardless of what his constituants wanted. How is Crist a coward? He basically went against his own party and listened to the people. I wish more politicians would do the same...kudos to Crist.

I don't care why Crist vetoed this bill. The important thing is that he did. This was never about education; it was always about money. What's the best way to save money in education? Pay teachers less.
Crist listened to the people....what a true governor and representative of the people should do. He will be backed by about 200,000 teachers in the state of Florida for the veto of SB6. Not only a smart political move on his behalf, but a moral move- SB6 would not have been good for the students...and thats what really matters!
Anonymous. You must be Jeb Bush or some other big business guy or a republician legislator. Those are the only people I know who favored this bill. You all almost got away with Bushwacking Florida, but thank goodness for a gov. with ethics.

All these pinheads calling this a sellout to "special interests" on the governor's part. I know your all about "faith" and stuff, but let's talk evidence: What about the reaction? Tens of thousands of messages against the bill versus a few dozen in favor of it. It was not only teacher's unions but PTA's (mine included), Boards of Educations(elected!!!), superintendents, individual parents who spoke out against this bill. Way to go GOP, you woke a sleeping giant in another attempt to corporatize america and destroy the last of the middle class. Now lets strike back in November!
Crist doesn't care about either education or unions. Crist cares about getting elected. I'm thinking he underestimated the negative response to the bill and couldn't get Jeb to guarantee to back him. It'll get him the votes of republican teachers, but don't know who else. So, he'll lose the GOP primary and run as an independent and try to steal votes from the Dems. Could work. I'm sure that if Jeb had promised to back him, he would have signed it.
As a teacher, I have absolutely NO problem being held accountable. And, I do believe that the process for ridding the teaching profession of those shouldn't be in it MUST be over-hauled entirely. However, there are simply TOO many issues attached to this bill that were not addressed in the amendatory process. It was shoved through so fast and without public/professional input. I am not a union member, but I AM a registered Republican. As a conservative, I DO want teacher accountability . . . in fact, I welcome it! But, this bill, as written, was going to create havoc, not satisfaction at any level. We've got to look for a WIN-WIN situation . . . for students, teachers, and parents . . . the three key ingredients to overall success.

At least Crist isn't beholden to the loony bin, wing nut fringe of the Republican Party. Rubio is a neophyte and it will show when he gets trounced in the general election by either Crist as an Independent (because his party left him) or Meek as a Democrat. Crist just saved his political future by vetoeing SB6. Just think of all the Independents and Democrats he just won over by vetoing this idiotic bill and showing that not everything is black and white.

The bill was bad for parents; teachers and children. It would only have served to allow Bush to make more money because it would be his company that does the testing!

Crist is a coward that sold out the students of Florida to the Devil known as the "Florida Educators Union.". I am glad to see that if elected for US senator, Crist is easily persuaded by the pressures and lobbying of special interest groups. GO RUBIO!
