Four-Year-Old Dies After Shooting Himself in Head

In today's roundup of the travesties and tragedies of South Florida: A 4-year-old boy is dead after accidentally shooting himself in the head, a police officer shoots and kills a man during a traffic stop, the search for a missing boater has turned into a homicide investigation, and a teen dies on a church doorstep.

Four-year-old Brandon Widder somehow got a hold of a gun last night inside his family's Miami Gardens home and shot himself in the head. He was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital shortly after 911 received a call at 7:30 p.m., but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police believe the shooting was an accident. However, they have arrested 21-year-old Jonathan Dortch and charged him with culpable negligence with a weapon and tampering with evidence. [CBS4]

  • Decarlos Moore, 36, is dead after a Miami Police officer shot him during a midday traffic stop. Police won't say why Moore was pulled over or why the officer shot him, but they say the incident is under review. Moore, who has a prison record, was stopped around 11:30 a.m. yesterday around the 1600 block of NW Third Avenue. He got out of the car, and the officer opened fire. [Herald]
  • Domingo Manuel Vilalta, 22, was out on the water with some friends for the Fourth of July 4. Two boats were in Biscayne Bay near the Broad Causeway. When the boats returned, Vilalta was missing. His body hasn't been recovered, and police now believe he might have been purposefully pushed overboard after an argument. [CBS4]
  • Nineteen-year-old Robert Sams is dead after a drive-by shooting outside Fraternity Baptist Church in North Miami Friday night. Police are searching for a gold Dodge Intrepid or Pontiac Grand Prix. [CBS4]
  • The second suspect in the Miami Beach Resort and Spa shooting has been denied bond. [WSVN]
