Lawton "Bud" Chiles III, son of the last Democrat to hold the Governor's office in Florida, is running for Governor as an independent. Why exactly? No one is sure. He was costing along getting double digit support in some polls, possibly thanks to name recognition, but hasn't had much of a campaign. Now he says he'll continue running unless he think he's "not viable." Let's make it easy for Bud: You are not a viable candidate for Governor.

Chiles had polled as high as 16 percent in a Rasmussen poll taking on August 16. Though, in a poll taken by Rasmussen just this past Wednesday he's down to 8 percent support. He may have been polling high based on Democrats recognizing the name "Lawton Chiles," considering that was the name of his late Governor and Senator pops. With name recognition for Alex Sink, the actual democratic nominee, rising, he may see his support dwindle farther.

Chiles has no party to rely on, not a lot of campaign cash, no previous experience in public service, and a leadership position in a church some regard as a cult.

To put it bluntly, sharing a name with your popular father does not a viable Governor candidate make.

"I'll say this till the end: I'm not in this race to create a situation where Rick Scott becomes governor," Chiles said yesterday according to The Buzz. "I believe every day, and I think what happened in the (Republican) primary is a very strong indication that I have a very viable candidacy. As long as my candidacy is viable, then, if I'm sending the message that Floridians want to hear, I'm going to keep doing that. And if, at some point, I feel that it's not viable then we can have another discussion about it."

Chiles still thinks he is viable though, and says he'll pick a running mate next week. Unfortunately for him Bob Graham does not have a son named Bob Graham Jr, but we're sure there has to be another Bob Graham in the state. Maybe he'll run with Chiles.
