Hayward, known for his distinctive British accent, has been a mainstay reporter at Miami's sensational WSVN for about 20 years. He has been married to Lisa -- formerly an anchor in the West Palm Beach market and now newsreader at WSFL's struggling morning show -- for 17 years. The couple has two sons, ages 10 and 13.
The incident happened Saturday night in Coconut Creek. The family, according to Jose Lambiet's sources, was driving home from dinner when the couple began arguing about the DUI arrest:
An insider tells me the Haywards were arguing about Lisa's recent arrest when things really got heated up. Derek, who drove, admitted he grabbed his wife by her shirt as she sat on the passenger's seat, then kicked her and the children out.Derek was released from jail Sunday morning, and police say that both husband and wife reeked of alcohol at the time of the incident.
He was charged with simple battery, a misdemeanor. There was no evidence he hit her.
