New Times Cleans Up in Green Eyeshades

  1. Miami New Times cleaned up in the nondaily division of the 60th Annual Green Eyeshade Awards, which determine the best work in 11 Southeastern states. Former staff writer Natalie O'Neill took first place in investigative reporting for "Piece of Mind," a probe of suicides and other problems at the mental health unit of Jackson Memorial Hospital. Staff writer Tim Elfrink placed first in business reporting for "Fall of a Titan," the story of a billionaire's Ponzi scheme. Elfrink and former managing editor Jesse Hyde also took first for coverage of politics with the story "Guantanamo's Final Days." Staff writer Gus Garcia-Roberts and music editor Arielle Castillo received second-place nods in public affairs reporting and criticism.
  2. New Times Broward-Palm Beach staff writers Michael J. Mooney and Lisa Rab took first and third, respectively, in sports commentary and investigative reporting.
