Norman Braman Launches Petition to Recall Mayor Alvarez

When most citizens have a problem with the county government they maybe write their commissioner, show up at a meeting or leave an angry comment with The Miami Herald. Not Norman Braman. The billionaire is once again throwing his over-sized wealth and influence around and is launching a recall effort against Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez. Braman's latest efforts come after Alvarez supported a property tax rate hike in order to bridge the gap in next fiscal year's budget.

"Mayor Alvarez was responsible for presenting a budget to the Miami-Dade Commission that reduces by only 1 percent the current operating budget and at the same time calls for a major increase in the real estate millage tax," Braman said according to The Herald. "This outrageous tax increase has been enacted while citizens are suffering."

Braman, who has a net worth of about $1.5 billion and according to the latest Forbes 400 is the 269th richest person in America, is no stranger to leading massive efforts in local politics. Back in the early '80s the former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles led a successful campaign to derail plans to refurbish the Orange Bowl so that the Dolphins could continue playing at the historic stadium. Recently, he led less successful attempts to derail a plan to build the Marlins Stadium on the Orange Bowl site and to curb publicly funded development in downtown.

Braman had previously threatened to also start recall petitions against any commissioner who voted for the tax hikes but says he's not moving forward with those plans yet.

Mr Braman, my respect to you Sir. It's about time we show these politicians the same way we vote and place them in office, when they act selfish and wreckless without any regards for us taxpayers, we can remove them from office as well. Since the economy downfall, a lot of us taxpayers have been working without pay raises and continue to do so with the hope things would pick up and get better. In the meantime, our Mayor instead of setting an example and doing that, does completely the opposite and gives his people raises on our account by raising taxes to homeowners. Mr. Braman has so much money that a tax increase on his home and/or businesses would be like spare change in his pocket. He is doing this for the people of this community. If this tax increase didn't include a pay raise for people who already make a substantial amount of money, not including all the extra perks, car allowances, etc., we the taxpayers provide, at a time when EVERYONE ELSE is trying to make ends meet or losing their jobs, then I wouldn't mind paying an extra 40-70 dollars a year for 9-1-1 services, etc. WE THE PEOPLE have just had enough. The top government officials spending our hard-earned money on themselves & their friends.They're elected to represent the people, not to use our tax dollars to pay for past & future votes (job security). Becoming an elected official has become a license to steal. $400 million in the red & they're voting $132 million for themselves. It's disgusting!!!! Wow, most people are blind by the fact that Mr.Braman is only looking out for #1 him self. The facts are, he is pushing this recall because all his car dealership properties will get a tax cut, plus his home. That millions in his pocket. I work for local Government; Cutting Taxes means services will be cut! Meaning, you call 911 because grandmother has a heart attack, guess what! Now instead of a 3-5 min responds time from Rescue, you get to wait 10 mins. maybe even longer. So who is really benefiting from this tax cut. As for most regular home owners, What you have to pay 40-70 more dollars a year? Braman on his properties, thousands.. Now who is he really fighting for.

Mr. Braman has a good point. However, he is not being all truthful as to the why he wants the recall to be done. Braman was left out of the bid and plans for the new Marlin's Stadium. Naturally, he is angry and responds by disrupting the progress of the stadium. Please don't misunderstand me; I am totally against the funding of the Marlin Stadium with tax money. The owner of the Marlin's should have built the stadium the same way that the GREAT Joe Robbie built the Dolphin Stadium with his own money. However, Braman so called crusade is not about us, it is all about himself because he was left out of the Marlins Project. He lost the first fight with the mayor and the county, and now he is attempting to launch a second fight against the mayor and county by supposedly putting the tax payer interest first. We don't need Braman to fight our battles, because in reality he is fighting for himself and not us. We need to fight our own battle. We need to show up in force (50,000 to 100,000 People Strong) at the Stephen P. Clarke Building and demand that our property taxes be lowered. Now if the Commissioners, Mayor and Property Appraiser don't listen to the people, we just simply don't vote for them in the next election. Let me know where to sign the petition. I also want the names of all the commissioners who signed for this increase to our property taxes. While their employees get increases to their salaries, pensions and benefits we have to make adjustments in our daily lives, so they can spend our money unwisely. The people who are retired, cannot continue to afford any more increased property taxes. Let them get a real job and be on the same lines as the ones who are unemployed see how they like that.

Where is the "justice" in pay increases for county employees?..from my pocket Take from the makers and give to the takers, sounds like SOCIALISM to me. Look at Greece and France to get a preview of what will happen when there is nothing left to take from the "makers". Commissioners caved in to the public sector unions. Shame that it does not include recalling the commissioners who voted in favor of his sneaky and underhand budget, although at least we can vote them out of office at re-election time. This is one campaign I will donate money to, to increase property taxes in this economy and devalue homes even more is insane. Carlos should be in jail the way he spends money, he has 2 $60K SUV, 1 BMW, 2 chauffeur,increase salaries for his office staff by more than 40%, $250K salary, 100K benefits, all paid for by Miami Dade County Residents. The he decreases salaries of the rest of the county employees, firing others, while giving his staff 40% pay increases. His final blow is a 14% rate increase on property taxes to maintain wasteful county spending habits. I want Mayor Carlos in JAIL where he belongs. People will lose their homes because they can't afford property tax bill. I have an apartment building in Miami Beach and I it take 4 months of rents just to cover property taxes. We have to unite and make every effort to back Mr. Braman; otherwise we will be faced with the same problem next year. Sign the petition and oust the eight who voted for using the property tax increases to pay for county employee salary increases and bonuses. Our property taxes were lower this year compared to last year, due to lower property values. It is somewhat understanding that the millage rate would be increased to try to balance the county budget and not have an even bigger slashing of vital services, but to have about 75 % of the tax increase go to cover county salary increases and bonuses is unbelievable, disgusting, and cannot be allowed.

I'll vote to recall the Major Carlos Alvarez and the other commissioners that vote for the insane hike on taxes. I believe is time to do another Revolution like our founders did against England. We have more tolls, increase property taxes, the half penny tax (where is that money going, I don't see any construction or development for a new public train). Before the boom time of Real Estate the county was doing ok with less money. Let's start the Revolution against all these unworthy politicians like our Founders in this great country did.

Specially for many retirees that cannot afford higher property taxes while the County employees continue with salaries increases and other like the rest us can't hardly pay our mortgage and property taxes . Is not envy with county employees is that we cannot afford anymore their salaries/benefits/pension . They make 30% to 50 % more than the average job in the private sector as per WALL STREET JOURNAL AND NEW YORK TIMES reports .
Miami is going down hill with our political idiots that run this city. The ric\h are loosing money and the poor are getting poorer but the politicians and government work force are getting richer purely from out free, government donated TAXES :)So why not get new mayors and commissioner and everything. It would be a fresh start to maybe a better Miami.

Norman Braman owns a house (a very big house) on Miami Beach http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/norman-bramans-home/, so property tax increases could hit his wallet pretty hard (perhaps knock him out of the forbes top 400). So if you think he is doing this just because he cares about the good people of Miami-Dade County, think again.
We need to clean house. Term limits for commissioners and for the incompetent half dead state attorney who refuses to go after her cronies in local government.
Braman has been horrible to Miami. He doesn't want any development in downtown, has tried to kill numerous projects that would inject life into the area, and would rather everyone live in sparse neighborhoods all over the county, so they can rely on cars...hey wait a minute...Braman sells cars? Would you look at that!
It's about time we all got together to let county government know that we are not going to stand by complacently while they spend our tax dollars on salary increases, wasteful spending, and perks without regard for the public. It's also amazing that the tea partyers are not up in arms about the county's recent tax increase. Where are all the sign waving, gun toting, angry people? Why aren't they standing on a street corner waving flags and hollering like they do in Fort Lauderdale?

Three cheers for Norman Braman. It is a really hard job to educate the ass clowns that run this county, so we may as well replace them. I think there should be comissioners at large and with term limits. I will vote to get rid of the obviously incompetent ass clowns that run county hall.
