Westboro Baptist Church Will Burn Korans Now

Back when we first picked up on the story of Dove World Outreach Center's planned "International Burn a Koran Day," back before it had become a media spectacle, we mused, "The Westboro Baptist Church currently holds the title of most insane thing purporting to be a Christian church in America, but could a small congregation of horribly misguided Christians in central Florida soon be taking their place?"

Well, it appears Westboro is going to keep that title. Dove World has apparently decided to call off their Koran burning, but Westboro has promised to burn Korans in their place.

Westboro Baptist Church is an insane faction of religious zealots best known for protesting the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan while holding signs like "God Hates Fags" and "God Hates America." In their free time, they also cover Lady Gaga songs.

Apparently, Westboro burned Korans to little notice back in 2008 and was upset that Dove World's planned protest was causing such a storm. Seriously. Now that Dove World Pastor Terry Jones has called it off, they sent out a gloating e-mail promising to hold their own Koran burning.

Here's a portion of the email sent out by Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of Westboro founder Fred Phelps:

"While you sissy brats browbeat and jockey with the false prophet Terry Jones--pretending like the lives of those soldiers are your political and personal pawns--we will tell you the truth. The blood of the dead soldiers is dripping off the hands of General Petraeus. The blaspheming talking heads (politicians, talk show hosts, false prophets, arrogant Pentagon-perverts) of this nation of proud sinners have put the bulls-eye of God on the backs of these soldiers. Burning the Quran could not possibly imperil your soldiers any more than you have."

But, because Westboro hates America just as much as they hate Muslims, they promise to burn a Koran and an American flag, because they're equal opportunity bigots. No word if they'll find a way to show off their hate for the gays this Saturday too.
