County Commissioners Joe Martinez and Sally Heyman Want Red Light Cameras

• Sally Heyman is just another drug frenzied fool who is elected by a bored electorate. She does anything she can to get attention, and could not care less if it helps the community or not. Just watch one of her rants on the County website, she doesn't make any sense! We need to recall this embarrassing life long politician before she does some more damage to Miami Dade.

• Hard to blame commissioners looking to somehow balance their budgets. And bad drivers are such an easy target - they seem to be everywhere. If these cameras even tweak them a bit I'd be a happy camper. Safer too.

• sense of comfort?! since when is the road to be comfortable?? you might just be one of the few who sit back to open your phone and text while driving and not notice your exit coming up or that you missed your turn and just move without looking over to see if there is someone next to you because you need to RELAX WHILE DRIVING. This is because the ticket comes to the owner of the plate not the driver, IGNORANT S. Back to the case at hand, that is not what you learned when you read the handbook ,if you read it and not bought your license. YOU MUST BE A DEFENSIVE DRIVER, NOT A RELAXED AND CARELESS ONE. The road has many personalities and moods on it at the same time, so I'm sorry that i cant relax while i drive around the road. This is the main reason I'm against these cameras, it wont be fair that one time after years avoiding unconscionable drivers, can get your record ruined it a split second. keep in mind that these cameras also affect the right turns. the book says one thing the locals say they are superior to the state rules. i will just say you cant follow two roads at once you're bound to crash into something

• Red light cameras are simply a new means to SCREW the vast majority of drivers who will be ticketed for - as Jonny stated already - running a yellow light that is timed to change too quickly, etc, etc. Cameras are a LOT LESS about safety and mostly about screwing drivers. And anyone who encourages MORE "big brother" intrusion into our lives is totally creepy - or grew up in a police state (eg Cuba).

• There are nearly 1,000 deaths and 150,000 injuries nationally each year as the result of red light running. This is, in my view, an unacceptable statistic. If the use of red-light camera enforcement can reduce these deaths and injuries, it should be supported. Also, the new Florida law was just enacted this year and needs a chance to work over time to change driver behavior and make drivers more aware at intersections.

• Legalized robbery? Really? Did you get that term from one of the "ban red light scameras" sites? You must be one who loves to speed and get away with it. Have you read any of the statistics associated with red light cameras? 1. they reduce accidents, resulting in lowered fatalities 2. they keep people who love speeding from doing so 3. it creates a sense of comfort knowing there is less of a chance of someone blowing through a red light.

• if you love your life you should just try and read or see about Arizona's take on these cameras. people need to understand that this is a business revenue for the state and cities not safety. please understand that lives in Miami are at stake when you worry about a camera not who you share the road with. Everyone believes that this is the answer but they aren't really driving on the road with people texting, scratching their crotch or just flirting with a chick on the sidewalk. They are the real danger because they believe the road is where you should do everything you should do at home,and now i have to worry about a stupid camera, you don't know how to drive.

• Attention To: Armando the Rat Actually, everyone should be fully aware that imposing these red light cameras is a new TAX. Commissioners are forcing this TAX on good hard-working people in Miami-Dade County, and can now say we have a "traffic tax", or "driving tax" or "Miami Dade Commission Tax". Just wait until after the first year of tickets. There will be tens of thousands of voters lining up to vote out this Castro regime in the next election...

• Jon: Not particularly right, no. It's true that some of the worst red-light offenders really are awful, whizzing through a red light at high speeds seconds after a light turns red. Targeting just those people would get a lot more support from the general population. However, this measure targets all of us by ticketing anyone who misses a light by even a fraction of a second while going at any speed. I don't like or want to run red lights, and it sounds like you don't either. But I do occasionally run one, and you almost certainly do as well. Sometimes the road is too slippery to stop just in time. Sometimes the yellow light catches us just a little bit off-guard. Sometimes other cars are tailgating us so closely that we're afraid to hit the brakes hard enough to stop before the white line. Sure, we could drive more slowly, but that impedes the flow of traffic and causes more slowdowns and even traffic jams. It's better to match the speed of other traffic and count on a police officer's judgment if he or she sees us running a red light against our own will. Instead, we are counting on the "judgment" of emotionless machines backed up by observing police officers who will give tickets for every single technical infraction that is recorded by a camera. This is why many people are uncomfortable and even afraid to drive when these cameras are watching us, and this is why you should be as well.

• I think this is a great idea. Miami Dade has perhaps the highest concentration of red-light runners in the country. These cameras will at least keep people honest.

• How is this a bad deal exactly for drivers? Should not there be an automated way to punish people who violate the rules when the police are not around? By signing up to get a license to drive, you restrict your ability to do whatever the heck you want. There are too many selfish drivers out there driving willy nilly. Target the worst ones and keep them off the road, right???
