The USC Trojans and the Miami Hurricanes aren't that different: private schools in big warm weather cities with a healthy amount of national championships and a sometimes troubling amount of controversy. The big difference is that 'Canes haven't won a national championship since '01, whereas Trojans have claimed two since then. So will Al Golden's latest coaching hire bring a bit of that USC magic to Coral Gables? Do we want that USC magic?

Brennan Carroll, the son of former USC coach and current Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, has been hired by Al Golden to coach tight ends and head up national recruiting.

Reports The Sun-Sentinel:
Carroll joined his dad's staff at Southern Cal in 2002 as a graduate assistant. He worked with the offense and special teams his first season and tight ends his second season. He became a full-time assistant coach, working with tight ends, in 2004. In 2007, he became USC's recruiting coordinator. Also that year, he coached Fred Davis, who won the John Mackey Award as the nation's top tight end.
So, yeah, he got the gig probably through a bit of nepotism, but at least he did a pretty good job.

Carroll didn't follow daddy to Seattle, and wasn't retained by USC when Lane Kiffin came in to town, so he's been out of coaching work for the past year.

Carroll is Golden's first hire who he either did not bring along from Temple or retained from the Hurricanes current staff.
