Jacory Harris Has a Clean Slate, Will Be Evaluated on Swagger

After the disastrous Sun Bowl against Notre Dame, many 'Canes fans thought that Jacory Harris' days as the starting quarterback were done. Not necessarily, says new offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. He wants Harris to know that along with Stephen Morris, he's still very much in the running for the position, and both will be evaluated, at least partially, on swagger.

Fisch was on Joe Rose's show on WQAM-560 yesterday morning and addressed the brewing quarterback controversy.

"What he needs to know is this: I have all of the confidence in the world in him, as I do Stephen [Morris]," Fisch said, "Because I don't know any better right now. I'm not going to stare at a piece of paper and see what his statistics told me or what a report told me about a guy. I want to see it in person."

So, what will Fisch be looking at in person?
"We're going to try to coach swagger, confidence, intelligence, knowledge of the game and passion. We're going to evaluate them on all of it."

Swagger was once practically synonymous with the Hurricanes in college football circles, and as much as swagger is hard to exactly define many fans felt like the team's swag-index went down proportionally with their winnings. So it's encouraging to hear that swag will once again be part of the play book. After all, the U invented swagger.

Fisch says that he didn't see many 'Canes games in 2010, but remembers many of Harris's best performances in 2009 and still thinks he can get the best out of Harris. Some may be rolling their eyes right now, but giving Harris another chance may be good recruiting. The 'Canes have gotten something of a rap for dampening the potential of recent quarterback recruits. Kyle Wright anyone?

In the meantime, we present what we hope will be the 'Canes 2011 spring training anthem:
