The University of Miami women's basketball team finished regular-season play last night with a 70-59 victory over Georgia Tech. That win secured the team for a first-place tie atop the ACC with Duke, a second seed in the ACC tournament, and, for the first time all season, a place in the AP poll's top ten.

The Canes appear at number ten in this week's poll. It's not the program's highest ranking (the '91-'92 team climbed to number six), but it is its highest this year and, for that matter, in the past 19 years.

Though the Canes finished with a 26-3 (12-2 in conference) record, identical to the Blue Devils', they'll take the number two seed in the ACC tournament because they lost to Duke in their lone head-to-head game. But they have a good chance of seeing them again in the tournament finals. The tourney kicks off March 3 in Greensboro, North Caroline. Here are the brackets:

The good news is that for the past 11 years, the number one or number two seed has won the championship. But the number two seed has won only twice in that time (in fact, the number two seed has only made it to the finals in six of those years).

Plus the Canes have been beating every other team in the conference except for Duke. Though they could very well meet #3 Florida State in the finals. The 'Canes won the latest meeting, while the Noles prevailed earlier in the season.
